iPad newbie

At my work today every employee was given an iPad 2 as a gift as a "thank you for a great year" gesture. Pretty cool actually.
However, I'm not too familiar with Apple products...I actually avoid them for the most part, but the iPad is a cool media product I'll admit.
So what are the really cool (preferably free) things I can do with this iPad? My 4 year old loves playing around on it so kids stuff (preferably educational) recommendations would be appreciated, as well as cool apps or games I should check out.

Actually, since you just got it, I'm not sure if you are able to jailbreak it just yet anyway...
But one semi-cool gizmo plugs into your headphone jack and changes sound into IR signals (universal remote control... and it has a reciever as well so it can learn remote codes) google iimote for that one. I just picked one up in Hong Kong. Had fun playing with the A/C in my hostel room after learning the remote codes for it :P

Depends. If you're into fiddling with music at all, iOS is pretty much the king of softsynths. There's a ton of decent free ones plus pro-gear-spec commercial apps from Korg, Native Instruments, Moog, and Fairlight, among others.

For your kid, there is a lot of beautiful educational things... - Itsy Bitsy Spider HD - by Duck Duck Moose. - Wood Puzzle HD (different themes), from Tropisound Corp. - 123 Kids series (alphabet, numbers, etc) - 123 Color HD: Talking Coloring Book (Eng, Spa, Fre and Ger Voice-Overs Included) - Several sketch apps. ..and many more.
Respect to do something cool, I second the RB post. If you're musician or artist, the iPad is definitly your device.
Music:
- GarageBand: Everything you need to track a song. Virtual guitar, piano, bass, drums, sequenced drums and a full-featured recording studio.
- Music Studio: It combines a piano keyboard, 65 studio-quality instruments with sustain, a fully fledged 127-track sequencer, extensive note editing, reverb, real-time effects and much more on a user-friendly interface.
- A lot of virtual instruments you can find there... - Cute instrument tuners....
Among avalanche of games. Some crappy, some highly addictive (as Monsters ate my homework). Even you can find a 3d app to learn to parking.
Robbie.

Thanks for the suggestions.
IMO the AppStore is a mess to find what you're really looking for. I know that there are tons of apps and games out there, but searching for what's available and filtering the lists to refine what you're looking for seems cumbersome to me.

In particular, I find the App Store terrible for zeroing in on music-related programs. This category is so damn broad, yet browsing the App Store for specific types (e.g. media player, recording, virtual instruments, composition, cataloguing, sheet music) is a PITA.

I haven't seen much on jailbreaking an iPad 2 (yet) but what's the advantage? From what I understand it is so you can install software from other places than the appstore.

Sorry to bump my thread, but are there any FREE apps that will let me browse/explore my local home network? It would seem like a simple enough app, the Droid marketplace has TONS of free apps that will let me browse my LAN from my phone, but not the iPad.

As I understand it: general UI customizing, playing emulators, generally doing stuff not authorized by Apple Almighty. Also, via Installous, free paid apps.
