Metal Slug and/or NeoGeo Question
#267878 - 11/03/11 12:02 PM

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First this question came about because I noticed some distortion problems with HLSL filter and MAME in regards to 'aperture.png' with the game 'Metal Slug 1' when viewed in either 'standard aspect ratio' or 'pixel aspect ratio'. When in 'standard aspect' ratio view the aperture.png gets distorted because the 'y count' does not allow a value that is mathematically accurate with the change in aspect ratio. When in 'pixel aspect' ratio view the aperture.png looks fine because the 'y count' treats the game resolution as it's canvas I guess. I will post more information about this problem on the MESS board so 'Just Desserts' can see it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Anyway, I had a look at some items in Metal Slug 1 under 'standard aspect' view & 'pixel aspect' view. I noticed that the circular explosions and car wheels *looked more round* when in 'pixel aspect' view and they did *not look perfectly round* when in 'standard aspect' view.

I then had a look at a random video on youtube of a Metal Slug 1 cabinet and it looked to me there were black bars at the top and bottom of the screen.

This leads me to believe that maybe we should be using 'pixel aspect' view in MAME for Metal Slug 1 and possibly all NeoGeo games?

In MAME 'Standard aspect' view fills the screen vertically.
In MAME 'pixel aspect' view has the black bars top and bottom of screen.

Can anyone check and confirm this on a real Metal Slug 1 cabinet and maybe with other NeoGeo games as well.

Thanks.

No, it just means that someone hadn't adjusted the settings on their CRT correctly for the MVS.

No worries, if you choose "screen stretched (304x224)" then it fills the screen with no black borders top/bottom/left/right at all and everything that is suppose to be round is round.

Not sure if that helps with the aperture.png distortion, I'll have a look.

Cheers.

hi jclampy:

I notice the problem too, I play the 'King of Fighter' series with standard and I feel there is some distortion with the picture, but I am not sure about that.

then I launcher the SEGA Dreamcast emulator to boot the 'King of Fighters Evolution, The v1.000 (2000)(Agetec)(NTSC)(US)(M4)[!]' GD-ROM to see the difference.

I use the PrintScreen button to snapshot some of game pictures of both MAME and SEGA Dreamast edtion. I compare the pictures. and what I find is that:

when use 'pixel aspect ratio' in MAME, the ratio of the pictures that I snaped is match the SEGA Dreamcast edtion. but when use 'standard aspect', it is obvious to find the distortion of the pictures.

I know that the 'King of Fighter' series also release on sony PlaySation. I will test it and post the result when I done.

I know it is not a real arcade picture ratio that I confirmed, but I hope this helps.

Also sorry for my english as I am from a non-english spreaking contury.
