What in a CPU does the speed of games in MAME rely on?

I'm thinking of actually upgrading to a new laptop for Christmas (which, it's close to that time, by the way, happy Halloween everybody!)
Does the speed of say, 3D games (and I'm not just talking about Rush (edit on 11/1/11) or the Cruis'n series, I'm talking about games like Konami's Jet Wave and games that currently don't run properly, but are playable) depend on the cache of the CPU? Does it depend on the cores? The threads?
I'm choosing between these options (for an ASUS G71):
- Core 2 Extreme (X9100): Dual-core, runs at 3.06GHz, has 6MB cache, and 2 threads
- Core 2 Quad (QX9300): Quad-core, runs at 2.53GHz, has 12MB, and I think 4 threads
What I know is that processors are hard to replace in laptops, rather than in desktops. But it seems that it can be done.

From my own experience, clock speed is by far the biggest karat (when comparing within the same architecture, which you seem to be doing). L2 cache would have a very small effect, especially since one of those has lots of it and the other one, humongous amounts.
I would expect most games to run 20% faster on the 3.06 than on the 2.53. I haven't played around with quad-cores, but I don't believe MAME uses more than 2 cores/threads, and even those, it does in a limited fashion.

For chips in the same family, the higher clock is the most important part for MAME.

Maybe I should go more for the X9100 (or T9900), since the QX9300 still ranges from around the $300.

Dual core is best and get the highest clockspeed available with HT being an added bonus. (HT not necessary)
Not very much software/games fully utilizes a quad, so in that regard you won't see any difference when it comes to MAME unless you wanna wee bit better compile time

I have been an Intel man for many Generations, but how do you think an AMD @ 8.46 GHz would do?

holy shit..... not sure how long your processor can handle that before dying :P even if it's water cooled....
can you play Gradius 4 full speed with this lol

I would bet he isn't using water, more like liquid helium? I read about the 8+ GHz also, but the article I read didn't say much....

Gradius 4 is full speed on my 4.7 GHz air-cooled 2600K.

For gaming, it'd probably wouldn't be the best. From what I hear, games don't use more than 4 cores. But MAME-wise, I don't know.

Are you sure about this? The Core 2 Extreme Quad-core QX9300 can go to 4333MHz from what I read.

I think a dual core 3ghz is faster than a quad-core 2ghz for mame..... not 100% sure

Portal 2 can use more than 4 cores for the water reflection and gel blob effects.

Out of interest, do you disable Hyperthreading, as i've heard it can cause slowdowns on some emulators (PCSX2) compared to an equivalently clocked 2500k.
Just wondering if thats the case in MAME...?

I'm using I3-2310m and I'm thinking of the I5-2540m, I found an ES version on ebay for $90.
Sure the best would be I7-2860QM but it's priced at $500, which is too expensive for my taste.

I'm guessing 4 GHz is the sweet spot for those games. I tried my E6420 @ 3.2 GHz with Asus P5B Deluxe and it didn't stay 100% the entire time.
Anyway, If your rocking those speeds I hope you always have your Laptop plugged in

Benchmarks should be the exact same and HT doesn't impact any performance at all. In fact, since the latest PCX2 supports 4 threads, if you have only HT capable Dual core CPU then HT will actually give you better performance.
The only circumstance I have heard of people disabling HT is to get insane overclocks on a CPU.
