Doesn't work very well if you have a high-quality IPS panel - I had to max out brightness and get the most oblique angle I could to see it. Those TN panels actually have a purpose...

I can see the "You can't..." bit looking straight on, just barely. The bottom line does require, as you say, about an 85 degree angle off perpendicular, at which point I can't really use the screen.
