"Pepsi Man" arcade game
#266442 - 10/15/11 11:02 AM

"Pepsi Man" has just been recently added as a new game to MAME. How come I couldn't find the game anywhere? Has it been released?

I am NOT requesting any ROMs, ROM sites, or missing files. I worded my post carefully. All I am asking is if the game has been released.

If it's listed as added or is shown in a MAME derived listing of games, it means that the file exists somewhere and it has been confirmed by a developer and the CRC32 checksum of its contents and has been tested to a degree which it was identifiable. That's about as "released" anything gets through MAME.

And yes, despite your wording, your message could be thought of a thinly veiled attempt of asking for a ROMset. You essentially are asking "This is listed in MAME and it is not available for download at my normal source. Why don't they have it?"

I don't blame the guy for asking. I never heard of Pepsi Man either. I always thought that there would be some kind of QA involved in the Mame Project.

Does it mean that I can develop a rom called Cola Man via some hacked Pengo ROM I found on Craigslist? How would anyone know I modified the rom in the first place?

Does the submission of rom documentation rely on a honor system? Does any submittable of a new game require proper written documentation?

Is there any bogus named roms in Mame? How do we know if anyone fiddled with the rom before screen grabbing it? There was a gray area when it came to counterfeit roms back in the day. That Galaxian Kong is a good example.

I agree with the your message could be thought of a thinly veiled attempt of asking for a ROMset, and I am glad the board is being moderated as such.

A more interesting question would be: what is this game and how did it get into Mame? What board did the driver come from, etc.

I took some time out to explore Mame.net and most of the documentation is geared for general submittable work, what development tools are available and the general "how Mame works" section (which I found to be interesting).

I would say that those docs really need to be updated. I appreciate that it is a global contribution schema, but I am sure somebody must have time to review those works.

Maybe add something related to the question raised by the OP in the Mame FAQ.

I agree. Hence this from Luca, who added it.

No, that was not what I was essentially asking. I basically wanted to know if after the MAME dev team adds a game to the "new games" list, does that mean it is released. Or does it mean that there is now a new game that MAME can emulate. When I say "released", I mean is the MAME dev team, that worked on the game, the only people that still has access to the finished game project. Meaning have they released their finished project of the game.

In case the OP is interested, the Pepsiman Playstation game (Japan release only), is much more interesting than the arcade game.

I thought this game was an arcade version of the PS1 game. I got kinda confused for a sec.

It's not worth that much, that's just what that seller wants for it.

Mamedev is still working on emulating "Coca Cola Man."

That's why!

Yeah, the seller's rejected 16 (!) offers, which is generally a sign that the asking price is delusional.

It only costs 5 cents per month to keep it on sale, so he's probably waiting for that one guy with disposable income to come along.

I'm... not sure what made you say that.

I sell stuff on eBay. Listing a video game with a buy it now costs five cents for up to thirty days, as long as the game is listed in their catalog. I list items at slightly above average prices with an offer option, then sell the games at less than average when the offers come in. It works for me.

Maybe it's some console game thing then, that would make sense with your catalog point... It's not like that for anything I've sold (including video games, but they were arcade ones so I guess not in a catalog). I feel ripped off.

Pepsiman arcade and Pepsiman on Ps1 are two different game.

The arcade version seems like a Bachi Bachi games while the ps1 version is a game were you run and jump over obstacle and it's in 3d.

You would feel even more ripped off if you did buy that game only to find it is 132mb in size and most of it is mpeg video.

It partly relies on a honor system, and this is an important issue for me.
That's why I try to document all my dumps as extensively as possible, just to demonstrate to people at large that my dumps are coming from real PCBs which have been in use in real arcades.
Another important thing to consider is the source of the PCBs to the dumpers. I spend part of my free time roaming old arcade operators, scouring through their old warehouse looking for undumped games. And when it's not me personally doing the field research, it's a number of well known and trustworthy arcade collectors and fanatics, whose standard for original PCBs is even stricter than mine.

You are right, and they are called "bootleg" for a reason.
