BCPL, APL and Pascal all predate C. It wasn't the first high-level structured language.

I'm pretty sure the GNU project wouldn't have taken off if Pascal was the major language choice when RMS got butthurt about a printer in 1982. C and UNIX are basically prerequisites for the existence of F/OSS, including hobbyist emulators.
