No background in DOT/EDOT

This does regard an old version of MAME. .104
This seems to happen every so often with Discs of Tron. I haven't played the game in a while, I come back to it, no matter what I do in MAME32 or in the ini itself - nor deleting nvram, etc, etc, etc - or even making sure I have directx installed. Same on another machine with a copy of the directory. Same in a completely new directory.
Nada. No background artwork in the game. Astdelux artwork shows, so I'm stymied. And I've forgotten how I might've fixed it aeons ago.
Anybody have an idea?

Do you have the correct artwork file? I can't remember what version it was exactly, but that was around the time that MAME switched to the new artwork system using .lay files.
You can open the zip file of one that works and see if it has a .lay file. If it has a lay file then just download the new artwork with the .lay file.

I wondered/had forgotten why I had the background png extracted from the file. Actually, it works like this:
- after some indefinite period of time, the zip *seems* to get corrupted. So:
- a fresh copy of dotron.zip (1.91mb - from some archival spot), and the background file named dotrone.png must be in the artwork folder.
- all artwork settings must be '1'
- save state must be '0', so that it can reset
Note that this doesn't work for dotron (with an additional background 'dotron.png' in the directory). The raster image 'zooms', but no artwork image.
