SuperModel 3 0.2a Out and What's New?

What's New?
September 24, 2011
Supermodel Version 0.2a is out! You can grab it from the Download page. The big new features are:
Audio, both SCSP sound and MPEG board music New input system supporting any combination of keyboards, mice, and game controllers Force feedback for a few games (requires new drive board ROMs that first appear in MAME 0.143u6)
This is a substantial update. Be sure to read the bundled README.txt in its entirety. The Help pages also provide a basic overview of various features and functions. We encourage you to visit the new forum to discuss and receive support.
A hearty "thank you" is owed to Nik Henson, now an official co-author, for his incredible work developing the new input system and reverse engineering the drive board, and to world-famous emulation supermodels R. Belmont and ElSemi, for giving me access to their Digital Sound Board and SCSP code, respectively. Last but not least, I'd like to thank our new host, Jeremy Rhoten for generously donating this web space and helping me get settled in.
Have fun!

This release should work well on Linux and Mac OS X as well (and probably *BSD). Build it the same way as 0.1.

Why I constantly play Daytona 2, despite the fact that I have all the games with cars for PC ? Thanx to all involved in this project/emulator ! P.S. On "Help page" says : To run at 1024x768 in full screen, type: supermodel scud.zip -res=1024x768 -fullscreen ...should be : supermodel scud.zip -res=1024,768 -fullscreen (comma instead of x)

Create all games as .bat file on txt Document: supermodel daytona2.zip -res=1024,768 -fullscreen -sound-volume=50 -music-volume=170 -show-fps
It works on any part of your pc!

I have an SCSP question, because someone apparently fixed some sound channels in Harley-Davidson & L.A. Riders (like the attract mode theme) that don't play properly in M1 and Nebula Jukebox, and some in Emergency Call Ambulance. Is this because of some kind of mask ROM that the Model 3's two SCSPs use? Because I'd like this sound problem to be fixed in M1. Maybe RB knows about this...
other than that, nice release of Supermodel, and things will without any doubt get much better.

You should probably direct all support questions to Supermodel's forum rather than filling up the news section here and hoping the author will read it soon. http://www.supermodel3.com/Forum/index.php

I'm cobbling some support onto my front-end - but the biggest issue is how to deal with where to search for games when the emulator itself has no support for a traditional ROMPATH.

For now you can use batch files and hyperspin in "PC Game" mode. It's an odd way round it but it works and it's not like there are several thousand games to add.

I'm still working on it. but since settings in "Supermode.ini" is a little complex and have lots of comments, I'll create Emu Loader's own config files for Supermodel.
I don't know when it will be released though.

do what I did for Emu Loader. create a ROMs selection screen and save the info into your frontend config files. that's how I did for Supermodel and the unfortunate now DEAD ZiNc emulator.

Pro-tip: Supermodel will dutifully save and spit out all config file settings, even mis-typed and invalid ones, whenever it writes a new file (which only occurs when configuring inputs). You can therefore create settings for your frontend in there, as long as you only need integers and strings.
You could create a TAFOID_ROMPATH setting that only your frontend recognizes:
TAFOID_ROMPATH = "c:\r0mz"
The drawback is that you have to parse the file on your own. If you already have an INI file parser, it should be possible to get it to do the job. Or, you can use INIFile.cpp from Supermodel, but beware the GPL license

I parse all files manually, so such a thing would not be an issue. The easiest and most robust way for me to support it is to require a MAME.INI with a rompath, with a fallback to "ROMS" in the same folder. Generally speaking, most Supermodel users already have MAME installed and roms are all in the same folder. With the MAME sharing, you get all the MAME add-ons such as picture and data files.
EDIT: My Front-End is updated for Supermodel now if anyone wishes to try it. http://mameload.mameworld.info

MAME runs everything that was in Modeler better than Modeler ever did (faster, even). That would be pointless.

Indeed, it's also one of the games I have very fond memorys of from a holiday down in Devon (and also, for F1 fans, it also guessed KERS nearly 20 years before it came out!)
I've been bugging various people for a while about this as well, it's the pesky network board that's the issue here I think, modeler gets "creative" with the emulation of that

I added this to my supermodel.ini
FullScreen = 1 MultiThreaded = 1 ShowFrameRate = 1 Throttle = 1 XResolution = 1920 YResolution = 1080
I'm gettin 35-40fps in 1080p on my laptop with Core I3 Sandybridge running Daytona USA 2 Power Edition.
With core I7 I guess I would get 60fps, but it was like $400 more when I bought my laptop, which is kind of ridiculous.
Also in 1080p..... I loose a bit of the bottom and top of the picture, I can't really see my position but it's ok, I'm glad I can finally play this game for the first time.

The only thing missing from Daytona 2 is the menu at the begining, they're all invisible.... guess it's all 2d sprites emulations.

Hm... well...
Supermodel 0.2a compiles OK on Slackware 13.37 (32-bit and 64-bit), but...
Both shows a collection of gray polygons...
Supermodel 0.2a + Fragment_NoSpotlight.glsl is not enough....
My (onboard) graphics card is a ATI Radeon HD 3300 (MoBo A790GXM-AD3)....
(Tested with scud.zip)
Any ideas????

The Mega GL drivers just don't seem to like Supermodel. Are they also this troublesome when running commercial OpenGL-based games that are more demanding?
I used to be able to run Supermodel on my Linux workstation on campus until the sysadmin arbitrarily decided there would be no more closed source drivers (unless absolutely necessary) and down-graded me to Mesa. It works for the one single legit OpenGL application I use from time to time for my work and I haven't been able to come up with a valid excuse for returning back to the Nvidia drivers.
If I ever need to write a custom graphical application for any reason, you can bet I'm going to make it require GLSL and OpenGL 2.x But hopefully, I won't be around in school for that much longer.

Totally possible if you mess with the shader files, I think it's even in the documentation.

The Mesa-based ATI and Intel drivers are fairly decent (and in some situations are better than the binary ones on ATI; their OpenGL stack is not really "pro-gear-spec" even on Windows), the Nvidia ones are still very primitive. Binary-only is *the* way to go with NV.

Yup. The shader itself is called Fragment_Flat.glsl, you can find it in the source code. Load it up with -frag-shader. I gave an example on the forums, if the OP would like to search for "Fragment_Flat.glsl" there.

Props to Bart for a fantastic job on this.
After helping clearing out my old mans loft I found a rather old Saitek R440 wheel and pedals gathering dust. Found some vista/win7 drivers and low and behold, force feeback heaven.
Mrs RCade was p*ssing herself laughing, watching me play Daytona 2 and Scud, till I told her this WASN'T now going into the car booty fund LOL.
Thanks again Bart,
RCade

It does not need to be installed, just unzipped.

How do you change the region in Daytona usa 2? it's all in japanese.
I heard pressing the test button then pressing both test and service button at the same time.
But this only test the rom files one by one.

Daytona USA 2 and Daytona USA 2 Power Edition ---------------------------------------------
To bypass the network board error, enter the Test Menu by pressing the Test button. Navigate to 'Game Assignments' using the Service button and select it with Test. Change 'Link ID' from 'Master' to 'Single'.
In 'Daytona USA 2', the region menu can be accessed by entering the Test Menu, holding down the Start button, and pressing: VR4, VR4, VR2, VR3, VR1, VR3, VR2. Changing the region to USA changes game text to English.
