If you're having them with that version, please reply and give your video card brand and model, what game(s) show the problem, and what your output resolution is. MG has fixed the other reported problems for the next MAME but he needs to be able to reproduce the cases where the seam still happens in order to address it.

- Okay, when HLSL is enabled, MAME will not boot ANY rom I select. After a game is selected from the list, MAME closes out as it should, but does not load the rom afterward. MAMEUI will boot a rom once and then crashes following an error message when I exit.

- I've experienced this problem since u5.

- My video card is an NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS.

Please check the following:

- Delete any per-game .INI files in the HLSL folder. For a time they were automatically written and there were crashes associated with them because certain parts of the information were not able to be stored and reread correctly.

- Try a completely fresh folder and install the binary listed here - http://www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=265009 Does it crash still? If you are still crashing, does it let you play at all then crash on exit, or does it crash all on it's own?

You've state you've had no problems until 0.143u5? Did you at any time adjust your video card driver or do any similar video related updates since it last worked? Can you run earlier version you said did work.. or are those crashing too? Are you using Windows XP or Windows 2000?

Hey Tafoid, thank you for responding.

HLSL folder was clear with the exception of the .fx files. There are no .ini files in the hlsl folder. Still experienced the same problems.

Yes, prior to u5 HLSL ran fine (granted all the bugs that were known at the time in earlier versions). Didn't make any changes to my video card or video settings as far as I know. Tried downloading MAME 143u4 and it ran roms with HLSL fine, so yes u5 and beyond are the only MAME builds giving me this problem. I'm running Windows XP.

As for the binary you gave me, this was a little interesting. I deleted the old folder and tried that one. When I first tried to load roms I was being given an error message each time stating "Unable to create the Direct3D device (8876086C)." Not long afterwards it stopped giving me the error message after selecting a rom, going back to closing out with no response as I stated before.

I've provided a picture of the initial error message.


So to recap, At first that build would give me an error message. I no longer get this message and MAME has gone back to giving me no response when choosing a rom with HLSL. My HLSL folder and settings in .ini are all at default. previous builds of MAME + HLSL run fine, this problem has been since u5.

Can you run a game with -verbose and -log turned on? Post the out of each here, please. I'd prefer if you use the 32-bit version I had you download so that no MAMEUI elements can be the cause of error.

Okay back again.

First off let me say, while trying to help get y'all this info was the FIRST TIME I ever ran MAME through command prompt. I honestly never even knew how to do that until now. Normally I ran MAME through the .exe file.

And just for the record Tafoid, I have been using the 32-bit version of MAME you referred me to.

Anyway, MAME runs and loads roms fine through a direct command line. When I try to launch roms through the MAME executable/game list with HLSL enabled, I still sometimes get the D3D error message or no activity at all.

I haven't seen anything submitted for fixes - but it should be functioning for most people fine now.

One question, do you know what version Nvidia Driver you have installed for that XP Machine? There have been instances where recent driver updates have caused crashes and even BSOD in machines.

I'd suggest going to:
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us

.. then pick the earliest driver available, install it and see if that fixes the issue. Note your current driver version first, though, in case you desire to revert or set up a restore point via OS. Try a couple earlier ones if you feel adventurous.

Beyond that, there isn't much anyone can do at this time.

I was under the impression your problem only occured on MAMEUI. MAMEUI is not a supported build anymore.

Hi guys, sorry I missed testing HLSL with 0.143u6 but 0.143u7 appears to be working the same goodness for me as between 0.143u3 - 0.143u5.

I am currently using an ATI HD4670 under XP32.

You didn't miss much. u7 is definitely the way to go for HLSL. Previous versions had bugs with .ini handling.

Thanks Tafoid, but I've actually never updated my video driver before. At the time I was reporting this problem I was still using an old driver from 2007. I tried installing the latest driver, and then the oldest one they have still listed from 2009. Neither solved this problem.

It's strange, HLSL itself works, but for some reason MAME refuses to launch roms through the executable when it's enabled. I can only launch roms through a command line now. Previous versions worked entirely fine. I'm surprised, but it seems like this problem is exclusive to me. Guess these new builds of HLSL don't like my ole 7900GS no more.
