Didn't they already do an episode that involved an alien (possibly that guy from Omicron Perseai invading Earth in a Space Invaders spaceship?

I remember that one. Good episode. "Invaders, Possibly from space!" "Tremble in fear at our three different kinds of ships!"

It was kinda lame if you asked me.

I did appreciate how obscure the references were though. I got a legitimate chuckle out of the punch out reference, because they referenced the arcade version (which nobody remembers) complete with "body blow! body blow" sfx.

Well, the whole sixth season has just been between lame and brutally unfunny. There have been episodes, that had glimpses of the past greatness though. I have no idea why the critics love this show. After the second movie it went straight downhill. Pretty sad since the last regular episode before they got cancelled was the best one ever. A lot of the recent new shows, that got slammed by critics and/or were even cancelled pretty had more sparks going each episode than Futurama has in its total TV run since coming back from the grave.

The problem with Futurama is that they decided to renew it a full 6 years after it's cancellation. A show needs momentum for good stories, you can't start and stop and change format two or three times like it has. The reason that the Family Guy renewal (no judging about the show) went so much better is that they retained 100% of the writers when it came back, and even then it took a year or so for it to get back up to speed.

I don't really think that's the problem. The first movie was great and the second was still really good, but the next two already started having pointless stories, that just try to spoof things or incorporate the oldest jokes in the world. They also dropped a lot of the back story elements and went to straight standalone episodes. Just recently they finally started picking up on the Fry/Leela relationship more seriously after basically ignoring it for a long time. I think the critics are still "old school cartoon" lovers like friends of mine, that always tell me how great the recent years of The Simpsons have been although they went stale quite a while ago. When Family Guy came back on the Simpsons guys incorporated some of the methods of it at some point and went a bit out of there for a few seasons, which was actually quite refreshing and gave you several "WTF?" moments something you didn't expect. Futurama was always out there in its initial run (those X-mas episodes were shocking), but now they play it safe and family-friendly for some unknown reason, although they are definitely placed in adult programming (it's followed by Ugly Americans, which was IMO the best new series last season).

But anyway. Mordecai and Rigby (from "Regular Show") are the new guns in town and I really wonder who's gonna top that show in the next few years.

Edit: Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh!

WTF? The first movie felt like watching bad fanfiction, and the second movie was lame shit. I didn't even bother to watch the next too.

At least the stories weren't as disconnected as the following ones and you still felt they actually tried to do something. I think the last part of the movie is just third to the cloverleaf and the dog flashback episodes, although it's all already very tame (remember, that Fry had sex with his grandmother and became his own granddad in previous episodes, such stuff will even leave Family Guy red-faced nowadays, although not American Dad).
