Does Mame make Midi requests?
#263022 - 08/26/11 03:27 AM

Roland Virtual Sound Canvas & Midi Files

I got an urge to hear those great tunes from Doom and Descent which plunged me into a hunt for sound cards that can still support a waveblaster daughter card.

For those that heard those tunes from a basic soundblaster, you missed out on some great sound.

For example:

I have a Korg which came with a Mediavision Pro 3D.
Really outstanding in its own way, though not absolutely true to an original Roland Sound Canvas.

As it turns out, options are pretty much over if your machine is running windows 7

Then I happened upon Roland Virtual Sound Canvas.
An emulated SC-55!
How bloody cool is that!?
Does it work in Win7? don't know yet, but it rocks in XP.
After installing, go into your sound settings and there it is for midi.
Fire up doom or duke nukem, dosbox.
It all works and sounds awesome.

So then I'm thinking, does Mame make requests for midi?
It does not appear to. Perhaps it doesn't need to?

Nope. MAME generates all sound by emulating the actual hardware and chips. If a game had a Sound Canvas built-in we'd emulate the Sound Canvas. The sound system a lot of Taito 90s games used is straight out of the Ensoniq ASR-10, for instance. The composers never really took advantage of the power, but it was there.

For most games with sequenced audio that data started off as MIDI, but in most cases it's converted to a more compact / faster to interpret form before being stuffed in ROMs. (There are exceptions: at least one game in MAME has actual .MID files in the sound ROMs that you could extract and play, but I can't remember which one anymore).

Thanks for the follow up.
Of course Mame emulates it all. Otherwise, it wouldn't sound right now would it?

In my own followup I've ventured on to a more current program called bassmidi. Coupled with the weedsgm3.sf2 soundfont, this does a very good job of midi sound playback for the old dos games, and everything else.
However, nothing sounds as good as a real Roland sound canvas so I'm moving on the real thing.

It will be connected to a HT Omega Claro sound card, also in the mail.

Should be a trip to hear how Mame sounds through an outstanding sound card.

Hey, back in the 0.2x days it tried to remap all the FM chips onto the Sound Blaster's OPL3. That was, uhh, interesting ;-)

I'm not a big fan of add-on sound cards in 2011 unless you're doing DAW stuff (ProTools or Cubase or Reaper or whatever). S/PDIF digital out from any motherboard with Intel HD Audio on-board is going to be as good as your amp/speakers can make it. (Not analog out, obviously).

I remember that very well.
I can't recall if it was a single emulation of Mr.Do! or Mame, probably Mame, but the music play back was cool with reverb. Not authentic at all but I liked it!

I want my Dolby Live surround which I can't get from the optical port on my current motherboard.

I picked up a Creative X-fi Titanium HD and was greatly disappointed. Sound delay, crackling, popping. Crap.

Hopefully the HT Claro with satisfy. Seems to have nothing but praise.

I have the HT Omega Striker which is a few steps below what you're getting and I'm pretty happy with it.
