HEALP!
#262432 - 08/18/11 12:03 PM

I can't sleep! I'm wide a-fuckin-wake. Got too much shit stirring in my brain about past crap. Warm milk my ass... that doesn't work, other than to make your throat all phlegmy so you can't sleep AND can't breath.

Assuming Gatinha won't take care of you...

Walk it off. Or play online mahjong.
Or make a table of logarithms by hand, thus making your brain want to go to sleep.

Probemly too late but next time try to watch "The Creeping Unknown" aka "The Quatermass Xperiment" if you get the MGMHD channel. DVR'd it a couple weeks ago and I still can't make it past the first 20 minutes without dozing off.

The answer was always before you and you didn't realize it. TETRIS.

I’m convinced Mario is a hobo.
He wakes up everyday in the same clothes, runs around in sewers, and collects coins for a living.
At the end of the day, he uses the coins to buy mushrooms

No, NO! The 'Tetris effect' and not being able to go to sleep... Total mental torture!

I've found, what brings me down quick is doing something tedious and repetitive, and NOT fun or mentally stimulating.

> I can't sleep! I'm wide a-fuckin-wake.

Well, for starters, the next time this happens don't sit and stare at a monitor. Back-lit screens tell your brain that the sun's up. "Rise and shine, bitch!"

Worrying about the sleep that you're not getting is not just useless, it's counterproductive. You have to just give up. Say, "Fuck it. I've gone without sleep before and didn't die."
The infuriating this is, if you can say "fuck it" and mean it you'll probably nod off...

And remember, if you don't sleep a wink just lying on the bed is good for you. Most of the repair work that your body does at night will get done, even if your mind is coming off the rails, as long as you're in bed. Creeping around the house all night is NOT restful. Even if you're mentally wired for sound be nice to your physical self and just stay in bed.

I Used to have this problem a lot.

Used to take me several hours to get to sleep, tossing and turning, ...and end up having horrible dreams to boot.

The solution was a brief time doing Meditation.
You learn and eventually excel at focusing and controling your thoughts, emotions, and mind.

Now I can get to sleep in a few minutes. When I wake, Im in the same position I started out in.

A simple exercise and example of forced mind control:

Lay down. Take 5 slow deep breaths, focusing on the feel and control of them. Then, start to Think of anything Red that pops into your mind. A Red hat, brick..ect. Do this for 2min. Then move on to the next color in the Spectrum: Red,Orange,Yellow,Green,Blue,Violet or Purple,Finishing with White (Thats 14 minutes total. It goes by painlessly)

Remember, Take at least 5 very deep breaths in and out before you start. Try not to move any muscles all through. If you can hold out, not moving the body for about 8 min, it will get heavy, and sleep... even with the mind mildly awake. The mind, being 'Forced' to think about things that are not conductive to any real emotion or deep thoughts... will slow to a nearly, or full sleep state.

The more you do the exercise, the less time it will take, the easier it will be, and the more benefit you will see from it.

This is just an introduction of course, to proper meditation, which yields even greater results. However, a lot of ppl have a hard time jumping right into the discipline of the real deal, without something basic and easy like this first.

In a month of doing this every night, you will find amazing difference, and it lasts a lifetime, even if you stop the exercises / meditations.

Edit:

A few other tips:

1) Dont eat or drink 1hr (or more) before you intend to sleep. Food and non-water drinks will fire the body back up, making it much harder to get to sleep.

2) Obviously stay away from things with Caffeine, Energy drinks, high sugar content, for as long 'before' sleep as possible. Dont use Alcohol. It doesnt work as well as you would think... and it will have many negative consequences.

3) Try to Confront things in waking life as best as possible when they happen. If you bury things, the sub-conscious mind will start to un-earth them as soon as you are trying to get to sleep... and in the form of nightmares, when you are not able to hold them back.

4) Learn to be able to let certain things go. There was a saying: "Let go and let god". You dont have to be Religious to get the idea/benefit from this. Some things cant be changed.. and over-thinking things (stressing) wont usually help anything anyways.

5) Realize the greatest thing of importance to your Happiness & Well-Being, is your internal situation. Given All the money, time, and resources in the world, and you still could be completely Miserable inside. If there are things you know you need to work on, make the efforts. Every step is progress. And progress internally, can give you a better life experience.

well, you remember that discussion we had regarding lavender? A few weeks ago, I pulled a muscle in the
shoulder/neck/back area. My wife has this lavender smelling thing that you can put in the microwave to heat
up and then apply to achy muscles. I did that and after a little while I started dozing at my desk. It was the
middle of the afternoon.

Oh for Pete's sake.

Aromatherapy. The main factor is that you are probably breathing much deeper, and paying more attention to the breaths. The extra Oxegen, and the minds thoughts pointing to a specific thing.. helps to relax the mind. Additionally, if the solution has a pain-killer, that helps in mental irritation botherings.

If I have any slight pains, I take some painkiller before sleep to help hasten the relaxation.

Sometimes I pop some menthol creme under the nose, just for long lasting scent. Perfumes are nice, but much more costly.

A side note.. If you are getting Phlemmy with Milk, its a sign that you may be slightly allergic to Dairy. Ive only recently realized this within myself. Age has made all my once insignificant reactions, much more profound.. sadly.

Milk before bed isnt a good idea either. Most Milk is high fat, and using that therapy often could pack on the pounds quickly.

As far as I remember hearing, The digestive system shuts down as you sleep, so it turns everything to fat rather than process it as normal.
