Thanks Italie, I actually read that ARTICLE mentioned. That Pioneer receiver was a monster. It was made when there was a "power war" going on. The Pioneer SX-1980 has the balls to back up what it said it could do to... 270 watts RMS per channel! A beautiful receiver! I don't doubt for a minute that it would sound better than most of the crap that is made today.

My grandmother had that very receiver sitting in her "play room" for years. The volume never wen't past "1", and it never saw anything but old crooners under the record needle.
After she passed, my cousin and I gave that thing the running it needed while cleaning out the house. The speakers turned to dust. Literally.

My first receiver was a Pioneer SX-3600...
It did not take long for one of the push button switches (Speaker A, IIRC) to break. After a couple of weeks in the shop another broke right after I got it back (maybe Tape Monitor? I cannot remember). I got it fixed again. The guy at the shop told me Pioneer got a batch of bad switches. I said screw it and sold it. I bought my first JVC. The RX-40.
That receiver kicked ass. Stereo Review gave it a rave review for it's amp section saying it was worth the price alone. The preamp. EQ and tuner sections were added bonuses. I kept it until I bough a Hi-Fi VCR and CD player. I ran out of inputs so I sold it to a friend and bought the one you saw in the recapping thread. I wish I would have kept the RX-40. It would have been a great receiver to have in the bedroom, etc.

I still use the pioneer receiver I bought back in high school (circa 1985) for the house stereo. With teenagers in the house, I had to put a plastic "governor" on the volume because anything past 3 blows the speakers (I know from experience).
I saved my money busing tables for two things... that stereo, and a C64, in that order.

Looks like my dad's old receiver, but they all looked like that back then... Probably was a Pioneer though, he's bought their stuff for years...
