Random musings from CA Extreme

Shows almost done now. Here's some random stuff:
- Yes, APB does have lights; three (left, center, right)
- Still say Chase HQ lights aren't right in MAME; something is missing likely
- Missing internal artwork for Terminator (that I never new was there)
- Solar Fox is one of the most beautiful games here
- Played the heck out of Video Pinball. Now I know what I'm doing with this one.
- VPforums.com tables > UltraPin
- Tron Legacy pinball is okay.
- Discrete games are cool. Would be cooler if more than half were working.
- Boot Hill needs more artwork
- I want my 8-way in Journey back in MAME ;-)
- Is there a language DIP in Asteroids Deluxe? I played a French version today.
- Warlords cocktail is the most pure 4-player game I've yet to play.
- There was an extreme lack of Universal games this year. Not one (save for SDQ)
- Got to meet Trevor finally. Handed off Atari Drag Race to him for scanning also.
- Also got to meet "Mr. Secret." Dude, I SO want to go visit his collection.
- Marble Madness II is not a bad game, just a VERY hard game that frustrates many.
- However, Die Alien Scum is a REALLY bad game.
- Having fun, bot not having FUN. Not sure why. Maybe due to the fact that a LOT of the games that are here this year just aren't working, or aren't in "collector edition" shape. Also WAY more crowded than the last time I was here.
- Saw my first furry in real life yesterday. Head to toe. Also had a guy stand next to me to play a game that likely hadn't showered for days. =P
Well, back downstairs for some last minute fun and pics.

RELAX and just have fun. Remember, it's all about the games.

Yup. Interesting game, and quite different with the artwork.

That's unfortunate - there were a bunch of working discretes last year (Death Race, several Pong varieties, Breakout, Space Race, and a few I'm not remembering).
> Boot Hill needs more artwork
Yes.
> Is there a language DIP in Asteroids Deluxe? I played a French version today.
I think it's a different set. ROM space was expensive on those early games, so selectable languages would've been prohibitive I think.
> Marble Madness II is not a bad game, just a VERY hard game that frustrates many.
It's very hard because the controller should be a trackball. That's as pure of a game design own goal as I've seen.

The real fun for me at CAX was always meeting up with people I don't get to see the rest of the year, even moreso than the games. Mileage may vary for Bay Area locals, of course.

US Billiard's video game Shark? iirc that may have been at one of the events you had attended.
Dan (TAFA maintainer) had taken photos of a Meadows Bombs Away cab that was at one of the previous CA shows years ago. Great game during its time in mid 1970s. It was almost like playing a home console game (so-so graphics), but the sounds made up for poor visual game play.
>> Boot Hill needs more artwork
>Yes.
That's what I was striving for when purchasing all the specific Boot Hill parts back in 2006. They were to be shipped from Illinois and instead were destroyed when going through one of the Illinois US Postal facilities at the time.

As for Atari Destroyer, the foreign language rom was an additional purchase item that could be ordered from Atari. It is mentioned in Destroyer manual and it is still needed/currently missing at this time for language support for Atari Destroyer.
I wonder if Atari treated Asteroids Deluxe the same way using the foregin language rom as an added purchase item that operators had to order/purchase separately if wanting foreign language support for Asteroids Deluxe.

There was a working Atari ("Horror Games") Shark Jaws last year or the year before.

I recall there was a photo of a US Billiards Shark upright cab at one of the recent CA Extreme shows. I have never seen or played that game in person, but did play a couple times (back in 1970s) of Atari's Shark Jaws.
iirc Shark Jaws may have been in same Time Out arcade establishment (at Westminster Mall in 1970s) that had some of the EM hardware games such as Chicago Coins' Flying Tiger still operating alongside some of the video games in mid 1970s. I wouldn't be surprised if quickly getting tired of playing Shark Jaws and went back to playing Flying Tiger since I was a huge fan of that EM game back in the days.
