0.143 x64 compiled with Vista x64 (HLSL Question)
#259133 - 07/06/11 04:42 AM

Hey fellas,

Today is the first time I've started reading about HLSL. I have a 27" Kortek arcade monitor in my cab. The compile went fine and I have cut and pasted the HLSL folder which contains the .fx files into the same directory where my MAME64.exe resides. I also performed a -createconfig to start with a fresh file. I enabled the switch to "1" for -hlsl_enable. I haven't really noticed any performance differences. Maybe I need to make some adjustments per the HLSL.TXT to see the changes.

My question is this...

Is this setting intended for arcade monitors or is it made for LCD's to gain the visuals of an arcade monitor? Or both?

Any insight would be appreciated and if this warrants an RTFM comment, I understand.

Thanks to MAMEDEV for the continued progress as always!

Jason

The easiest way to experience it without diving too deeply is simply add:

-hlsl -hlsl_preset 0

This will give you a good chance to test the fitness of your card in relation to using HLSL.

You must also make sure you have the DirectX RunTime Enduser package installed (link in HLSL MiniFAQ at the top of this forum). If nothing is happening then you likely are missing essential files. Running with the -verbose trigger will output just what is happening.

Thanks Tafoid. The DirectX SDK allowed it to enable it. Interestingly enough, running the line that you suggested enabled HLSL and I could see the effects, but slowed things down by about 25 percent...probably due to the graphics card. I think it's an ATI X1300. I only enable Triple Buffer and Refresh Speed in the .ini...everything else in terms of video settings is kept at default. I run a E6XXX C2D processor and it runs pretty much everything that I'm interested in just fine, except for the Blitz games. If I get a C2D E8500, maybe that would do it for that game.

MAME runs at 800x600...looks fine. Maybe HLSL is better for super high resolutions on LCD's. I'll keep playing around with it and see what I can come up with, but I'm certain I'll need a video card/processor upgrade to see any benefits.

Thanks again,
Jason

There's honestly not much point if you're using an arcade monitor, since the feature was designed to simulate the effects of all sorts of arcade monitors for LCD (and to somewhat lesser extent, CRT) PC monitors.

It's intended for high-res PC monitors (both CRT and LCD) to give more of an arcade monitor look, although it's pretty much infinitely customizable too. So if you ever wanted to simulate a monitor with a bad red gun or something HLSL can do that
