Nightvoice's It-Was-Better-Than-Nothing Repro/Vectoring Thread

For stuff I made not intended for Mr. Do's official site but that I use to get by with until the real files manifest. I hope to inspire with my mediocrity! I'm not a trained graphic artist, but I learned just enough to be dangerous in my various jobs. So I do a lot of reproduction vectoring in instances where no game art is available or the photos/scans are of poor quality but within my skill level to make. Enjoy. (Yeah, I hear the real graphics gurus snickering in the background.)

Dude, this looks really good for starting from a photo. Ever think about jumping in and tackling one of the high res "official" scans?

Okay guys, I'm throwing in the towel on this one. Given the limitations of my software, I can't make the gradients look any better than this, and I hate the silkscreen texture look so I don't even shoot for it. I experimented using Paintbrush spray can, but it didn't move to transparency worth a shit. This works for my needs, but not accurate enough for a submission.

Just be careful not to pick ones that are already done. It would be better to update that WIP page to avoid working on the same bezel twice.

Heah Nice job with this classic.
Perhaps someone can work in button motion as was done with Space Wars.
I have Star Hawk on my list of things to grab soon. The upper section is a bent marquee.
The scoring for ships would be nice to have as part of the art. I'm also going to get cleaner sound samples.
Glad I can now leave the control panel alone.

Oops. Didn't know you were working on that. If you have a better version, we should use that.
Yeah, I looked around the web and found only a low-res photo of the upper section. I remember how bad-assed this game seemed when it premiered at the skating rink.

No no, what you've done looks great!
I'll eventually add to it when I have the chance. The marquee/bezel looks to be problematic to remove so I've been skipping it for the easier targets in the warehouse.
Yes, its a tough game to photograph. I'll see if I can spot a decent photo from CalEx.
I hope you will help yourself to bezels waiting to be cleaned up. We love the help.

Hi NightVoice,
You might want to take a look a this one.
I have posted a group of pictures of Atari's Orbit in the FTP site. It may be possible to utilize some of Mr. Do!'s secondary artwork for the volcano cone buttons.
I'll get some more information in a month or two. I don't think it's going to be possible to scan this. Just two much to disassemble.

I'll take a look at them. Looks good so far, but the issue is always making out the text. I'm also trying to find a better photo of the CPO for Liberator because the only part not finished is the ship logos.

Great find. I hope it works. This is one of those games that's nearly impossible to play without those instructions. Do we know if these were light-up volcano buttons or just regular ones? The ones on the lower part looks light-up, while I can't tell on the upper part. Are the inputs set up in MAME for these lamps?

I've already checked the manual and let Nightvoice know which buttons are solid black and which ones light up, of which there are 3.
The manual does not mention when the lights turn on, so I will make a note of it when I check out the game again.

Awesome! Thanks for doing that.

Where would one find this FTP site? I make pinball and arcade models for the 3dArcade frontend and I'd love to make an Orbit. Got a thing for all those very unique early Atari cabinets.

I leave it to MrDo! to pass on the location. However, there are only several pictures of the Orbit control panel.
When I visit again in a month or so, I'll get you some pictures and dimensions of the cabinet.
If you haven't already done so, you may find the sketch-up models over KLOV of interest too.

Thanx Trev, I can definitely use some good pics, especially of the side artwork on the cabinet. Measurements would be very helpful also.
I have checked out the Sketchup models, but they are incompatible with 3dsMax, the unofficial 3dArcade modeler's program.

Really?! I don't think anyone's ever been blacklisted for any reason. Possibly there was a problem with the forum (which happens from time to time), I'll look into it.

Just another free service I offer.
I saved it in Corel as an Adobe Illustrator file, but I can't attest to how this will actually work in Adobe.

AND to end this thread with... Alcon, my game of choice.
Note that the decal and button positions are totally arbitrary. The Corel file is on FTP if you need to move them around or delete them completely.
