Brain (1986, Coreland) questions
#255110 - 05/21/11 08:55 AM

Just a couple of questions about this cool obscurity:

1: I remember years back in MAME I could have sworn that during the attract mode there is a screen that shows all the items and enemies and stuff, but in all recent MAME versions the game doesn't show this screen. I downloaded various older versions of MAME but even they didn't make the game show the screen. I thought maybe my memory was confusing it with another game or something, but then I noticed the MAWS entry for the game (http://maws.mameworld.info/maws/romset/brain) says "There are certain UFO's and aliens you can obtain them from, just watch the game demo's to see them." which sounds like maybe this screen did exist.

Messing some some older versions of MAME did show some emulation inconsistencies though, in the most recent MAME version the demo play gets to the end of stage 1, but in older versions the demo get killed near the beginning. The 2nd demo play where it shows a different stage is also different in old and new MAME versions. I think the oldest MAME version I have tried the game on at the moment is 0.83.

2: A couple of Japanese sites list the game as unreleased, I'm curious as to how MAME came across a pcb of it, and if perhaps there is a board out there with a correct checksum?

This part requires assistance of any pcb owners that might have the pcb in their collection and have equipment for being able to make read backups of the roms on the pcb.

For example, American Soccer was first listed as unreleased because "Shimapong" had info from a Japanese magazine that listed American Soccer as unreleased, prototype game. And that is what Bobby T. (unMAMEd) used as his reference. And then Kevin came along and ruined things. *j/k* ;-)

- 27th June 2010: Smitdogg - Kevin Eshbach dumped American Soccer by Universal! It's a newer version of Indoor Soccer. Note: Unmamed has this listed as unreleased. That's apparently wrong but it is quite rare and a nice score.

A similar thing probably happened many years earlier when Brain was first supported back then in late 1990s. That's the way it is with some items seeming to appear from nowhere because someone came across a pcb with an unknown or unheard of game title such as Uncle Poo.

>and if perhaps there is a board out there with a correct checksum?

Brain will require a pcb owner that has the game to dump and verify roms from the pcb. It should be on the want list if it already hasn't been listed earlier.

>Uncle Poo

This is a cute game, and almost worth keeping, at least for 'nostalgia of the time', if it didn't have some serious issues - for example, it not being at all forgiving on corners and edges of the maze. You just fucking stop, making the stick feel like a broke dick.

Incidentally, Brain I didn't even try because it was obviously a console game that made it into the arcade (like Lode(of shit)runner.

Consider it high comedy....sincere tragedy....whatever...don't take it personally.
