What's going on with Mess?
#252652 - 04/23/11 06:58 PM

Is Mess being abandoned, or is Mess going to be forever forked.

I have heard rumors that Mess is going to be absorbed into Mame, because the developers of Mess are more proactive thus being actively recruited to work in Mame.

Is there any truth to this?

Also is there going to be any activity towards getting the Laseractive and Palcom MSX drivers working with Laserdisc CHD dumps in the near future?

It would be nice to have Time Gal playing in Mame.

Forever forked. MAME is for arcade games, MESS is for computers and consoles.

News to me. Anyway, many developers work on both projects already.

is everything okay with your mental health? it seems, not.

MESS is developing very actively, SVN is updated daily, and there are MESS u-releases now which follow current MAME u-releases.

There are no plans currently. That said, we are reducing the differences between the projects in areas where it makes sense, but nothing user-facing other than MAME eventually using softlists to finally support multi-slot PC10 and MVS.

H*z* appears to believe that merging the projects will somehow transmute all the work being done on MESS into work being done on MAME. That ain't gonna happen.

It's very simple why things are the way they are: everything left to do on MAME is very very very very very hard. H*z*'s own list of things he thinks might be easy scares the shit out of me - I don't want to tangle with a single one of them (well, I might get back to kongambl at some point if I can work out the subcpu comms). Meanwhile the sorts of things that need to be done in MESS are easy and plentiful, like MAME was 8 or 10 years ago. Also, the nostalgia motivation works a lot better when I'm fixing up apple2gs (which I used when I was a teenager) then helping OG with System 23 (which I've only seen running at CAX).

Do dumps of the LDs exist?

Also, none of the current MESS developers knows jack about MSX. It's one of several systems that needs what I call a "platform champion". Mizapf fills that role for TI99, for instance, I do it for Apple II and Mac, and Kale does it for every J-computer that ever had a hentai game (except FM-Towns, which is Barry's). If you know the MSX at a technical level, maybe you could do that?

Judge used to write and sell MSX software, his drivers are the a2600 and gameboy so he's probably busy enough.

Edit: if anybody reading owns an MSX machine that doesnt have its IC locations for the bios in the driver, please scan your PCB. It would be appreciated

not only the a2600 and gameboy: the PC-Engine, the Wonderswan, the Epoch Super Cassette Vision, the GamePocket, the NeoGeo Pocket, the IBM PC 51x0, etc... and he has done a lot for SMS too, even if not recently

It's no secret that I have to do MSX2, V9938 in particular, mostly because I have to untangle the deprecat.h usage in it (and because it's used on Nichibutsu Arcade DVD HW, so my "hentai" motivation kicks in there )
