More information... It's something to do with the zipfile podrace.zip. It tests fine with 7-zip and WinRAR. I removed it from the ROMS folder and the audit went fine. I used CLRMAMEPRO to rebuild it and the crash comes back. If you audit only podrace, MAMEUI crashes.

From the command line: MAMEUI64 podrace -verifyroms >podrace.txt produces this text...

Hello,

Thanks for the info. BTW, I don't remember a MAMEUI32/64 0.142 release so any idea about when the RAM issue was solved? 0.142 or 0.142.1?

I update the ROMset with Romcenter by extracting dat MAMEUI32/64 from .exe file. Would it be a problem to update from 0.141 to 0.142 or 0.142.1, because of the RAM problem? I just don't want to spoil the whole ROMset...

I bet this is the cause. Straight from the whatsnew.txt

Created media_auditor object to wrap all the auditing functions in
audit.c. Updated all users to the new interface. Note that the new
auditing mechanism is slightly out of sync with the romload code in
terms of finding ROMs owned by devices, so it may mis-report some
issues until the new ROM loading code is in. [Aaron Giles]

RAM usage problems do not affect in any way your roms... these problem could have at most make MAME close abruptly when your whole RAM was full.
no damage was possible to the ROMs (how could it be? they are Read-Only-Memory, so MAME does only read them... only external programs can modify or delete them )

anyway, MAMEUI 0.142 was released around a week after MAME 0.142 and it got the memory problem. OTOH,
MAMEUI 0.142u1 has solved the problem.

of course, the suggestion is to update directly to u1, so that you can play games with no risk of the program closing due to insufficient memory

what happens if you create a podrace/ folder in your roms/ folder with the unzipped files? does the UI audit work?

no, that should cause a wrong total number of available romsets, not such a crash

moreover, if that was the cause, it would crash also the command line audit

I unzipped podrace.zip to a folder named podrace (roms\podrace). I then removed podrace.zip from the roms folder. I did an audit by right clicking and choosing audit. It still crashed.

F5 refresh still works OK.

btw, how is one expected to update mame32 to 0.142u1? simply uncompressing and overwriting files would certainly update mameui32.exe but would also overwrite my favourites.ini for sure.

If you created favourites.ini, then it will not be overwritten unless there is a file included with MAMEUI named favourites.ini. AFAIK, John only includes Custom.ini with MAMEUI, so you should be OK.

ok. this ensures that the problem is not in the zipfile (in principle you could have had a defective zip exe in the clrmame folder giving issues)

unfortunately, I'll be at work for some time, so I cannot test directly this until tonight/tomorrow.

could you try a last test?
try moving the unzipped files out of the folder (but leaving the empty folder there). now the audit should work and report some missing roms for this set (I guess 4?)
then try adding one rom at time and report which is giving issues (any single one? a specific one?)

thanks for testing

Just submited patch for this in MESS svn.
Buffer is now extended so there should be no errors.

Micko,

You ROCK! Thanks for all of the work you have done.

EDIT: I just recompiled and it runs the audit just fine now. Thanks again!

I ran an audit of my ROMs and two other games also caused MameUI64 to crash. The Zipped files are:

tenspot
rapidrvr

I simply deleted both of them out of my ROMs folder, and the audit ran through OK.

You could have just waited until the next version is out. The audit problem is fixed. If you are a self compiler, you can change mui_audit.c...

#252497 - 04/22/11 07:54 AM

Minor things, but thought I'd mention:

- when only on this version, when I switch to DD on Tempest set 3, the hwstretch button is graye out till I go to another tab, then come back to that one.

- when 640x480 is selected, and I select 60hz refresh, which is not available on my system (don't ask), it doesn't automatically switch the res to 'auto'.

you know MAMEUI would need a full rewrite and it has currently no developers, don't you?
this fix is the last of its problems...

First of all, thanks for getting this working again. At least for me. 141.u4 and 142 would not work for me.
I have an old system and the major difference for me is that it takes so much longer to boot up. About 3 and a half minutes. Older versions took about 30 secs. On the plus side, the program runs much smoother and faster. I'm guessing that the program loads more into memory than previous versions but that's just my hunch. Anyway, I'm glad that it at least runs on my dinosaur.

By the sound of that, I'm surprised any games of current MAME even run on your system.

Who is updating MAMEUI then? They can't do the rewrite? I assume it is open source for anyone to help out. If so, then I would assume MAME be popular. Do other ports have this problem too? I would help but I am not a programmer/developer/coder. I can test though!

That's precisely the case. Lastest MAMEUI32 has two files inside "folders" file:

custom.ini
favorites.ini

Updating to latest MAMEUI by uncompressing and overwriting would simply trash current favorites.ini file... Must be real careful...
