1 or 2 joysticks?
#252224 - 04/20/11 02:38 AM

I am getting ready to start my CP but still undecided if I want a 1 or 2 joysticks. Even though I already bought 2.
All of the games I can think of are games where players take turns. In other words, we play no fighting games. Just the old classics from the 80's.
This will allow me to center the joystick with the screen.
The only game I can think of that needs two joysticks is Robotron.

What killer games am I forgetting about that have two players at one time???

Thanks guys,

Chris

If you have two joysticks you should install them both. I don't see any reason not to, unless having the joystick centered is really that important to you.

You didn't even ask the interesting question though, which is what type of joystick is best. 4 way? 8 way? 4/8 way switchable? Physically restricted or logically? Analog with lots of maps to emulate 4 way and 8 way? What about 2 way games?

I have an idea for an insert into a control panel top that would take an analog joystick (such as an Ultrastik 360) and have some tabs built into the control panel surface that would slide restrictor plates in to make it a 'digital' 8 way, 4 way, or 2 way, in addition to supporting physically unrestricted analog mode.

If you have the time and skill, that is what I would recommend that you do, and then write up some plans on how to make it so the rest of us can enjoy.

I actually asked that 4 or 8 way question the other day in the Arcade Cab section of the forum. I bought 2 switchable 4/8 ways & I like them. they are the Mag-Stik Plus from Ultimarc.
I may throw the 2nd stick down at the end...just so I can play RoboTron.
I am just looking for any suggestions on good games I'll be missing out on without having a 2nd player.
It seems everybody is building a 2 player console.

Thanks

Robotron, Crazy Climber, and Smash TV are all classic single player games that require two joysticks. Double Dragon, Final Fight, or pretty much anything in the beat-'em-up genre has two players at the same time. Quite a few vertical shooters were, too, like 1941, 1942, et. al., which I didn't even realize.

Go to MAWS, click "deluxe search", set "simultaneous players" to 2 and click Search. There are tons of them from all eras. I can't see you regretting a two-joystick setup.

Yo mama needs to be played with two joysticks or risk feeling like she's missing out.

Dude, don't throw it 'at the end'. That automatically qualifies for crap-MAME

Let's not forget the fun of Karate Champ (at which I suck, but that's beside the point). BTW, KC, Smash TV and its cousin Total Carnage are actually 2P simultaneous, each of up to two players using two joysticks at the same time.

> Quite a few vertical shooters were, too, like 1941, 1942, et. al., which I didn't even realize.

1942 is alternating 2P, not simultaneous. Only one joystick... However, most of the 19xx successors to my knowledge are 2P co-op.

This may be the best advice yet. I don't want a crap-MAME machine.

I am going to try out some of these games....thanks to all for the ideas. Most I have never played.

Among many others, the Capcom beat-em-up family, including Final Fight, Knights of the Round, Shadow over Mystara, The Punisher, Cadillacs & Dinosaurs, Alien vs. Predator... then the Konami family of beat-em-ups, including The Simpsons, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Cowboys of Moo Mesa...

Then Konami's shooting platformers including Contra, Sunset Riders...

A personal favorite of mine is Strike Force, Midway's 2P co-op descendant of Defender.

With good reason! Co-op play with family or good friends is great. As I'm sure you've seen, many also go to the trouble of a 4P.

(Of course, MAMEHub/CSMAME address the long-distance issue, but local buddy-play is not to be forsaken.)

Joust and Bubble Bobble need two joysticks if playing with/against somebody else. (I'm sure there are more classics like this but these are the only two that popped up in my head.)

Although, Assault is a bitch without buttons on the sticks. I love that game but I've nearly sprained my wrist playing it.

there are dozens of 80's games that need two joysticks for a 2-players game.

lets play nice people.two joystick games are always hard to master but when you do its great.when i play robotron, you could just feel the abuse as i pound away on that machine.it never goes any faster though.
