I think it uses XOR tables and samples (sounds like crap compared to CPS2 QSound). It sounds like a frog's ass in a tin can. I'm not fond of it myself but I'll dump it.

It sounds like they reduced the frequency and bitrate down to get it all to fit on the chip, yes. I tried to get a video but it doesn't like my S-Video converter, though it looks perfect through my VGA out converter, but that one can't be recorded. Anyway, a video shouldn't be necessary. It's just going to be playing samples. If it sounds like a frog's ass in a tin can, it's accurate.

Looks like an OKI 6295 with the numbers rubbed off. So all the music has to be collapsed from live-sequenced to a single mono compressed stream, which is going to sound like ass even before you get to the sound effects.

Would it be possible to post an audio sample?
I'd like to know what a frog's ass in a tin can sounds like.

Maybe later, the board is in pieces (desoldered) for dumping.

On a 6295 the sample frequency setting pin is always hard-wired to +5V in 99% of cases or ground. There's a trace coming from that pin going to logic so not 6295.
Quite interesting though that seemingly just Americans know what ass sounds like and everyone else doesn't? Do all Americans listen to ass or is it just a random occurrence on special occasions for a select few?

Not necessarily; CPS-1 for example, had control over the frequency pin of its 6295 to switch between low/high frequency samples. The bootleggers appear to have done likewise to squeeze all the effects and music into half of an 8Mx16 ROM (why they couldn't/didn't use the other half we can only guess).

Apparently it sounds like arse.

Oh, I thought he was talking about a donkey owned by a frog.

ok, the other check is to see if pin 5 is the clock.
