newbie: mame 1.42 + Linux + mouse wheel = no z-axis
#251505 - 04/11/11 05:37 PM

Hi everyone,

I'm having trouble configuring up my MAME setup, specifically
using the mouse wheel (z axis) for games like Tempest. My
setup includes: MAME 1.42 (built from source), X11/gnome,
2.6.35 kernel, and USB mouse w/wheel (and trackball + TT2).
I found various posts of people having a "misbehaved"
spinner, but none where it wasn't recognized.

Details: Both the mouse and trackball can move the mouse
pointer around the screen; both the mouse wheel and the TT2
spinner can scroll up/down (say browsing in Firefox). This
also works while they are both plugged in (USB). However,
when I start MAME, neither the mouse wheel nor the TT2 are
recognized for Player 1 "Dial Analog" (ie, Configure General
Inputs Menu -> player 1 -> Dial Analog). Only "Mouse X" or
"Mouse Y" are available (ie, no "MOUSE Z"). I use the
"multimouse" option when both devices are plugged in. In
a desperate attempt, I have tried to edit a game's cfg file
("input" tags) with no success regarding the z-axis.

My guess is that my build of MAME does not come with z-axis
(mouse z) support. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Dave

Hmmm, let me take a stab at this. Tempest only has one axis... it doesn't matter what analog you use, rather its a spinner, the "x" of a track ball, the "y" of a track ball... whatever. I use the trackball for games like it all the time, more specifically 2 player Warlords (one uses my spinner, the other uses the trackball). Doesn't matter if the mame gui calls tempests control the "x" or the "y", or whatever, what controls you move it will accept as that control, so forget about looking for a "z" axis setting. When you go to the configure menu for it, and choose to set the controls, what ever control you provide input to it will accept as controlling the game. Can't say I ever tried it with the mouse wheel, but I 'spose it should work since it is an analogue input (unless I'm wrong, which, according to my wife, is common).

Thanks for your response!

I understand your rationale and I believe I tried what
you suggest: I attempt to map the Player 1 Dial Analog
Control, but moving the mouse wheel or the TT2 is not
recognized (after spinning either for quite some time).
If I move the mouse/trackball left-right or up-down, then
the setting is recognized as "Mouse X" or "Mouse Y",
respectively. It's almost as if (my build from source of)
MAME does not see the movement of the TT2 or of the mouse
wheel (but Firefox does).

Maybe I could
- try a slightly older version of MAME, or
- boot some flavor of Windows and try the setup there.

Suggestions welcome!

Thanks,
Dave

It's best to ask Linux and Mac-specific questions at the SDLMAME support forum.

That said, AFAIK the wheel on wheel mice is actually two buttons (click up/click down), not an analog axis. You'd probably be ahead using a real spinner.

OK - I'll move to the SDLMame forum.

To reply to your comment, though, I do want to use my new
TT2 spinner. I have a mouse w/wheel as a comparison for
testing purposes (to get my TT2 working).
