Casino night
#251412 - 04/10/11 06:30 AM

Just got back from my first ever casino/racetrack trip (one of the few in my state). It was a good friend's 26th birthday party. I'd been to the racetrack there before, but it was years and years ago when I was a kid, before there was a casino there, and I've essentially forgotten all about it.

I keep tight control of my quasi-addictive personality these days, ever since my days of Internet bingeing. So I budgeted $40 for food and $10 for gambling, and only ended up spending $1 on video slots. Yay, me. Maybe if I'd won something I would have spent more.

The whole time I was there going, "I've heard of these machines that take quarters, free money for the casino, and allow the player to play Street Fighter. What's so wrong with having those instead of a few additional slots?" (I kid... sort of )

One thing I realized is that MAME has a good decade-worth of games to go before we're through all the various video slots (those that can be emulated, that is, and aren't offered up client/server). Saw one of those "Joker Poker" things that Roberto keeps working on.

Overall, though, I wasn't all that impressed. Kinda want to go to Vegas now though, at least for the entertainment.

Holy cow, what kind of slots were you playing? I'm hardly a big gambler, but I'd be lucky if $10 lasted me 15 minutes. A dollar would be gone in seconds.

I've been to Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun in CT a few times and had kind of the same reaction as you. They're OK for a little while, but I couldn't imagine spending more than a day at either one. Atlantic City is a little more interesting, although I find it kind of depressing. It's like a thin veneer of glitz on what is otherwise a rather grim place.

Vegas, on the other hand, is a completely different story. I think some of it is just the scale of the place. Imagine the casino you went to, but with two dozen more within a one mile radius. It's just so nuts and over-the-top, you can't help but be entertained by it. I think they put something in the water, too. Like I said, I'm not a big gambler. $50 on slots and I'm pretty much done. Spend a few days in Vegas, though, and you find yourself walking past banks of slot machines going, "Well, I'll just stop and play for a few minutes." You definitely need some willpower to keep from losing your shirt. It doesn't help that my first time out I hit for $600 while we were basically hanging out waiting to go to the airport. I was hooked for sure after that.

Haha, penny slots. Ran through it, then lost interest in all of it. It helped that none of my friends were really burning to gamble either.

I can't stand penny slots. You hit for all these credits and you're like, "Woohoo, I won... a buck and a half..." Nickel slots are a huge ripoff. By the time you're done playing all the stupid lines, you're spending $2 a pull. Quarter slots are just right for me. $.75 is usually the max bet, and you actually win a little money when you hit.
