the cab pic on the flyer shows 2 control sticks, so its a bit like Assault (etc)

No. Densha De Go is a series of games where you drive JR trains. Ganbare Untenshi is about driving Enoden line trams.

ISO excavator controls. Dual two-axis sticks: left X = swing, left Y = boom, right X = curl, right Y = dipper.

Trams respond very differently to trains (acceleration and stopping distance). Since you're on the street, you have to watch out for pedestrians and vehicles crossing the track (JR trains are generally on elevated track). There's less emphasis on following the timetable to the second. It just has a different feel to it.
