Ah, forgot about Samsung. Are we taking bets on when they sell their storage division and who they sell it to? I'll put $25 on Seagate/Maxtor, Q1 2012.

I hope never. They don't need Seagate ruining their reputation. I wish Seagate would have never bought Maxtor. Hell, as far as I can tell, they just put Maxtor's name on their drives.

Either I got lucky or you just got a really bad luck because for me Seagate drives are the most reliable storage in hard disks. In fact as a PC technician I've been replacing Maxtor drives and a hell a lot of Samsung drives on PCs from clients because of mechanic failure.
Plus, I have Seagate Barracuda drives running on PCs almost 256/24. Constantly reading and writing data for more than 10 years and so far I haven't got a single problem with them. Of course that doesn't make me confident enough to not make backups once in a while.

I've been using Maxtor drives in my DVRs and PCs for years and have never had one fail.
The couple of Seagate drives that I've had were a little on the noisy side but didn't fail. I've only returned 1 drive under warranty. It was a Western Digital that the bearings were going bad in. It had a terrible whine. The refurb that they sent me is in use right now in my daughter's PC. I've got three Samsungs in my PC now. All seem to be fine. All three are the same model. The first two were made in Korea. The last one I bought was made in China. I've read these have a higher failure rate but so far mine has been OK.
That said, I think all manufacturers have had their share of good and bad drives. Some last for a long time, some don't.

I'm sure we can all say that, while our individual experiences may vary, generally our hard drives probably last longer with appropriate cooling...
So I'm glad I have one external cradle that seems to ventilate well, and an Antec Veris active-cooled enclosure which could almost double as a summer house fan.

Yes I have five Hitachi drives in my Antec Three Hundred case and have had no problems over the last two years. The case has two 120mm fans in the front pulling air across the hard drives. And I use PassMark DiskCheckup to monitor the drives.

Heh, I didn't realize about that. That's the issue with switching between decimal and hexadecimal systems, at any moment you will screw it up. 
My Seagate Barracuda 80GB IDE drive served well on my PC since 1998 to 3 months ago. Its sole purpose was to store downloaded files from Internet and P2P networks (that includes everything MAME related and backup ISOs) on a rarely turned off PC. Today is still serving as always, but this time as an XBOX hard drive.

What about Fujitsu? I can google up some Fuji 1Tb drives so unless they quite really recently...
Toshiba too, although they seem to be external only...

I've owned computers only in the last nine years, and mostly with single drives in them. One of the oldest drives, and 80gb Samsung from a micro-controller line, crapped on me, but I was somehow able to salvage it to run as a 32gb slave.

Consider it high comedy....sincere tragedy....whatever...don't take it personally.
