Before Ville's Supermodel wip update takes the spotlight.... *j/k*

Winners Circle almost reminds me of one of the Mattel Intellivision type console games.
Definitely a nice alternative compared to the poker game variety.

I'm sure I remember an earlier style horse gambling thing where you had little electro-mechanical horses 'racing' over a straight course in the middle of a console where up to 6 or maybe 8 people could put their money on various horses with different odds per horse!

Same here. I think it's the multiple single-color horse sprites, which was pretty common in INTV games.

This is why *ALL* Winners Circle were converted to 6-players roulettes. Early 80's operators didn't think it twice. They switched from a 4 players horse racing game to a 6 players roulette system, being the last one more remunerable.
Right now, I'm doing support to Lucky Roulette (up to 6 simultaneous players).

This has to be the only game I know of in MAME to use more than four players

You've never heard of 6 player X-Men? I guess you came along after it was a common topic of hysteria on boards, but still.

Here are the games with more than 4 players from MAME 0.141u2:

6 players:

Hard Dunk
X-Men (6 players ver ECB/UCB)

8 players:

Tank 8
Sprint 8

I recall seeing a couple 1970s era Japanese region flyers like that. It would be flyers that are currently not on TAFA at this time.

As for other similar games, Diamond Derby is supported, but not working yet.

Taito Derby Queen isn't supported. http://flyers.arcade-museum.com/?page=thumbs&db=videodb&id=4782

Steeplechase would fill out the 1970s era horse racing, if it can ever be supported (non-cpu game). It appears that game runs from a single board rather than the standard multiple pcb units that were used for many non-cpu games.
