Big Thank You for improving Galaxian, Super Cobra; something wrong with Amidar though
#247474 - 02/26/11 06:59 PM

I would like to say THANK YOU to all people behind the big improvements of sound emulation in AY 3-8910 based games, also Galaxian.

Super Cobra has finally the right sound as the original board. It took years, decades of misery but finally it's where it is supposed to be. Thank you!!! Finally time to play Scramble based games in MAME...

Also big thank you for improving Galaxian sound. I can hardly believe it but YES. The boomy sound of explosion is just as the original arcade board. It again took years of misery - the Galaxian simply did not sound like the original game. I know the early builds used samples but then they stopped supporting them and it was a huge step backwards in terms of the authenticity of the sounds.

OK now I still have a felling Amidar has something wrong with the volumes of the AY channels - being - the background music plays too silent OR the foreground sound effects play too loud. Definitely the original game was more balanced. I hope people behind these drivers already know about this issue and will fix them one day, as they did with "now perfect" Super Cobra and Galaxian (and many others).

Are Asteroids and Asteroids Deluxe messed up sound-wise now? I'm using 141u1.

If you think something's wrong with the sound in those games, state what you believe is wrong. We can't read your mind.

The work that was done was not so much AY related but more in line with advances in discrete sound emulation.

Now, I know you mean this message to sound thankful for all the work done but when I see terms such as "years of misery", it hurts. I wouldn't think that being able to play any game even if the sound were missing or not quite right qualifies that time spent as "misery". You always had the option of not to play it...

This is a subjective observation. The best way to back up your words is to provide to the MAME team a recording from an actual PCB - directly from the board itself. Speaking for myself, in the current release (0.141u2), Amidar sounds pretty good. In the past I had noticed volume issues, but I don't notice them so much currently.

The funny thing with Amidar is when it utilized samples, the 'default' volume settings were much lower for the background music. I would turn up the background music volume setting(s) to 2-3x the default (AY-3-8910A #1.0-1.2 slider adjustments).

I just recently fired the game up, as I had not played it under MAME since it went to emulated discrete sound, and was pleasantly surprised at how well the background music volume is 'set' and balanced with the game's other effects.

Going to the slider options to see what sound adjustments can be made, I noticed all sound is set with one 'discrete sound' volume control. So your only option is to change all effects at once.

For me, Amidar sounds great as is, as I believe the current background music volume is at the right 'setting' now, which is also much louder than the default setting when it relied on sound samples.

However, I believe a great feature, if ever implemented for cases such as this or in the case of Mario Bros. (walking effect), is seperate volume control settings. I know, it's much easier said than done. Maybe somewhere down the road though it will be implemented.

Heck, anything is possible...lol. I remember waiting what felt like forever for Mr. Do's Castle "Communication Error" to be fixed from the very first time it was added to MAME back in version 0.10-0.12. It took awhile, but I believe somewhere around 0.24-0.26 it was finally fixed and the game playable.

Yes, though I never liked it, I knew Galaxian was off.... new [Re: Tomas Mikeska]

It is much better. This thread has inspired me to play it, and actually get farther than ever I think. Still under 20k, but G is a shrewd mother fucker.

And I don't know about Asteroids, but astdelux is sounding (and looking) better than ever. (Minus a proper shader or something, of course.)

Consider it high comedy....sincere tragedy....whatever...don't take it personally.
