are blu-ray burners the only option for 4GB+ optical backup discs?
#246167 - 02/10/11 12:32 AM

cause the reviews are horror stories. it seems like there's not a really recommendable blu-ray burner.

i don't give a shit about blu-ray movies, i just need to burn data sets that are a pain in the ass to parse across 4GB dvds.

Your best choice, probably, are dual-layer DVD-Rs.

Which are also expensive as hell.

I'd go for USB harddrives. Would never trust DVDs for anything important.

USB flash drives cost 15-20 times what a single one-use blu-ray disk costs (in bulk), but aren't single use.

USB hard drives are terabyte-sized now for the cost of a blu-ray drive, and don't have an extra media cost.

Leave the shinies to the movies.

I have an LG blu-ray burner. 25GB BD-RE media goes for about 1,400 yen. A pop. Only down side I know of is that it's sloooooowwwwww to burn a 25GB disk

Just broke my personal record for number of consecutive days without dying!

For large data batches... (fixt) new [Re: jopezu]
#246526 - 02/14/11 07:19 PM

I find it was no longer worth the time, space and weight to keep burning collections of optical discs. My disc binders were a PITA to store, drag out and thumb through. So now I just use 2 TB SATA HD's that I plug into my eSATA cradle. Plus they'd be a lot more convenient to whip out with me in case of fire.
