Window 7 Home Premium (Upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit.)

I also have 8GB now. 32-bit sucks because of memories limited to 4GB.

so what's the point of your message? everyone's on x64 now.

also, 32-bit limit is 3GB, not 4. do some research please.

That's not what Microsoft says...

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa366778%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

Windows 7 Home Premium X86

Physical Memory Limit: 4 GB

User-mode virtual address space for each 32-bit process: 2GB
Up to 3 GB with IMAGE_FILE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE and 4GT

This may also be of interest to you...
http://www.geoffchappell.com/viewer.htm?doc=notes/windows/license/memory.htm

Quote:

That 32-bit editions of Windows Vista are limited to 4GB is not because of any technical constraint on 32-bit operating systems. The 32-bit editions of Windows Vista all contain code for using physical memory above 4GB. Microsoft just doesn’t license you to use that code.

As for me I'm still stuck with Windows XP with an old v1.4 pixel shader video card... v1.4! Most of the stuff out there asks for v2.0 and forth. I haven't tested a new generation emulator besides MAME in years.

If it weren't for the Sandy bridge chipset fix I would have upgraded by now. Now I have to wait till April. And no, I need 4 working SATA v2.0 ports. I won't waste expansion slots or live with only 2 ports.

Jeez, and here I thought I had the crappiest video card in this forum.

Not trying to sound mean, but if you are upgrading to Win7, why go with 32bit? 64bit x86 CPU's have been common for 6-7? years.

Given that all the currently-updated emulators run better in 64 bits, why did you do that?

Doesn't Windows 7 come with both 32-bit and 64-bit on the same installation media?

Yes, Win7 comes with DVD's for both versions(retail copies do at least).

Only the retail version comes with 2 DVDs, afaik. I bought one of my Windows 7 keys through my daughter's school and it only came in the flavor you chose. You can use the same key to install either 32-bit or 64-bit version though. You can always download the ISO file and put it on DVD or flash drive.

I'm still 32 bit (Vista).

But, I do run 64bit OS's in VirtualBox.

I am on an even tighter shoestring budget than I thought I was before. No way I can yet afford a new motherboard to handle more than 4 GB, never mind an i5 or i7 CPU, nor DDR3 RAM.

But I can (and will) dream.

After some moaning about my P3 flunking out, I bought a Dual core 8 GB with W7/64. So no more worries about bloat.

Now I have three 22" displays but want to add two more 17" displays to create 5. With Xp you could just pop a PCI dual headded card and get four displays. I cannot afford the ATI or Matrox Trip head cards. Could I just add two PCI dual head cards to give me the 5th display? Possible 6th head going to the projector.

Will Windows 7 play nice with six displays?

If so I can retire two cabinet PCs and be ready for the Galaxian3 that is coming down the pipe.

Firstly, why would anyone ever need that many monitors?

Secondly, I'd assume it's possible

Just curious about this as (IIRC) Galaxian³ had six seating positions, but only used two projectors to provide the video - so one dual-head card with two monitors attached would be providing essentially the same display as the original game. Or have I misunderstood something?

Really looking forward to seeing this one in MAME as well, BTW - only ever got to play it once and was completely blown away by it.

FWIW a single Radeon 6850 will drive 6 displays at once and only costs ~$175 US. I think that's cheaper and far easier to manage than 3 dualhead cards.

Oh, that's good to know. I don't regret my by then $450 USD ATI Radeon ALL-IN-WONDER 8500DV purchase save by incompatibility problems it gave with emulators (transparent lines between surface bitmaps, incorrect vertex calculations or simply not working at all for not being GeForce).

Times today make me believe that's not an issue anymore with any emulator today, to the point it will someday be possible to add hardware acceleration in MAME while showing the exact same output doesn't matter the brand.

Now i have till April so i can save a bit more. Thank you for the information.

ATI's drivers still are a bit behind Nvidia's, but they're far, far ahead of where they used to be. They hired a really good 3D programmer I used to work with and their drivers got better almost immediately, not that I can prove there's a direct connection :-) And being able to drive 6 displays from one card is super-cool, and something Nvidia can't do yet.
