Arise yon monkeys!
#242545 - 01/04/11 12:10 AM

s_bastian has done it again! This time it's the BSMT2000 chip used in all sorts of groovy stuff (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BSMT2000 | http://decap.mameworld.info/2011/01/02/23/).

It's monkey-time.

Thank you, kind Doctor Spankenstein. Your typing skillz are only matched by your 1337 spanking skillz.

Also, this is a note to "x_wins":
Please do not do the same image more than once. Move on to the next image so someone else can type the same bits you did! Thanks for your help!

No worries! s_bastian and I will mark a couple of those as "not done" and someone else will be along to type them in.

Thanks for your help!

Did two, the check tool says that the number of rows is incorrect and then it says it passed the verification. Is there something wrong with how I'm doing it?

I just looked at your entry, and it is correct, thanks. We need to fix up the check tool to keep better track of the rows.

Many people will get similar errors. Sorry for the issue. We felt it was better to get the data out there while the news was still fresh than to fix every bug the data entry php scripts had.

Same here, jungle music only helps for so long, maybe more tomorrow if there are any batches left.

Can't seem to figure out that LA ones though with the 1 liner, just took a look at MASH's with the all 1's at the top and ended up changing to that, everything else was easy.

Almost halfway done. new [Re: drewcifer]
#242596 - 01/04/11 06:26 AM

Nearly 32768 bits typed 3 times over!

We're nearly finished with the left had side of the ROM (Lxxx.png). The right hand side comes next (Rxxx.png).

Check out the ROM in the upper-left corner for the bigger context:

That's the reason why we are working this way. Imagine to have ONE SINGLE DEV doing it all alone. He will probably do the first three blocks then have a nervous breakdown, and resume only after recovery

Chances of having the job never completed or typos getting into the job are very high.

So GO MONKEY GO!!!!

wow, nice job. Lets hope this can finally lead to accurate sound emulation of the classic Data East pinball machines. Although with PinMame stuck somewhere around 0.7x, I doubt they will be pulling in the BSMT2000 emulation anytime soon

Three last stragglers. new [Re: drewcifer]
#242694 - 01/05/11 03:04 AM

I've gone through and checked all the submitted work. It all looks very good!

There were, however, three that were marked as "done" when they weren't. Could I get someone to hop in and finish those three up? After that, I'll go through and fix some of the discrepancies by hand, and we'll start figuring out how to decode the data.

http://www.progettoemma.net/dump/

Thanks!

Well that took all of 8 minutes. Thanks! We should have some good text files and a few interesting statistics in a day or two.

MB8841 MCU question? new [Re: Phil Bennett]
#242852 - 01/06/11 05:14 PM

Hi,
you have successfully hooked a MB8841 MCU to Arabian (Sun Electronics 1983).
This MCU was a dump from BanBam (Sun Electronics 1984).

Question:
Can this MCU connected also to Route 16 (Sun Electronics 1981), Kangaroo (Sun 1982)
or perhaps to Fly-Boy (Kaneko 1982)?
All these games uses also a MB8841 MCU.

Sure, and the Amiga and Atari ST both use a 68000 CPU so you can totally run the same software on them.

Very likely as Kangaroo is one of the games that still need its MCU decapped.

No, the MCU ('SUN-8212') is used only by Arabian and BanBam.

a bit confused...
this mean that both games share same MCU code?

a bit weird, i though that games use their own mcu code (most common) while share only MCU as hardware type (as same)

Thanks to the following typists (in alphabetical order), the dump is complete!

amarok, angrylion, Armatic, ASI, bdam, BrianT, Canim, casper, ChuKy, Cpt. Pugwash, DarylC, Dr. Spankenstein, drewcifer, fireinthehole, franciscohs, Fungo, john666, Klez, Layne, leniad, Lord_Nightmare, Malice, MAMu_, MASH, mitice, MonkeyEgg, MrDuncanM, NaokiS, niiiih, Osso, Qun Mang, Rad R, RagingBoner, real, SothoTalKer, superultrahyper, s_bastian, TAZ-NZ, Various For, Warpath0007, Xiaou2, x_wins, Zer0

Out of 65,536 bits (8 kilobytes), 17 bits are questionable, even after 3 people typed them. Five of these are completely obscured and will require disassembly to figure out, 9 of them have pretty good guesses, but I marked them to be checked in the disassembly anyways, and 3 of them are pretty obviously in the middle of big globs of 1's, but I marked them as questionable just in case.

Thanks to s_bastian's ever-maturing monkey-tool, it took me roughly 30 minutes to look through the results, fix the mis-typed bits, and take note of the bits we're still unclear about. This is a vast improvement in time spent over what it would take one or two people to do it, and bodes well for the future. There was, on average, roughly 0.5 mistakes per image, and only in four cases did everyone disagree about a single bit.

We still have to decode these bits into a ROM and feed it through a TMS320C15 disassembler, but that will come in due time.

In the meantime, thank you again to s_bastian, all y'all typists, and to Dr Decapitator, whose images are so high quality this is a joy to do!

Andrew

Yes. The difference is the external protection data (and where it's stored: in shared RAM for Arabian but in ROM for BanBam).
