Program/utility info needed

Can somebody recommend the best program for wiping space on a hard drive with 1's or 0's? I don't want to format first/reinstall Windows, I just need to delete all the confidential stuff off a couple of computers and then run a program to completely wipe the free space so there's no way the deleted stuff can be retrieved.

CCleaner can do that. Download the one from the builds page that does not have the toolbar. Or use the portable version.

SDelete from sysinternals wipes all free space in a windows partition. Followed up by a defragment of your drive.
If you want to nuke the whole drive get a linux boot disk and use dd and copy from /dev/random.
Unless someone gets a scanning electron microscope it is very unlikely they will get anything from your drives after either one of those.
If you are really paranoid (and there is no reason to be) just put both of them in a loop and do it 10 or so times.

Thanks all but the person I got the computers from decided the only way he'd feel ok with it is if the hard drives were destroyed. So I got 4 decent computers (1 with a C2D!) for free, sans any hard drives. And I should get another one with C2D in a couple of months.

If you do go for wiping an entire drive though, I've heard good reviews for Darik's Boot and Nuke, as well.

Considering you can get a 1TB drive for < $80 these days, sounds like a pretty good deal.
