Cool story.
I was thinking not too long ago that it would be pretty cool to put a modern game in a cabinet. A lot of "indie" games these days have simpler mechanics (than, say, Call of Duty) and could be adapted into arcade games with minimal changes. You couldn't ever make any money selling them on a large scale, but as a promotional tool for a game you're selling on Steam or Games for Windows, it'd be a cool thing to take to PAX or put on location somewhere like Funspot.

Indeed.

In fact, this was done at PAX East in Boston in 2010. Some local university or something developed indie games, and each group that created a game brought a homemade cab. Or that's how I remember it at least.

Nice, I hadn't heard about that. I really should suck it up and get to PAX East next year, I work literally up the street from where it's being held. It's just the idea of huge crowds and long lines that turns me off.

Maybe I remember several when there was only one? Took some digging but here you go. http://gambit.mit.edu/updates/2010/03/pax_east_2010_countdown.php
Anyhow. I had a blast, went with long-time friends. We dodged most of the huge-line things and caught a lot of stuff that had less crowds, just socializing with other gamers and playing newskool, oldskool and everything in-between. You should come! I plan on going again.

The overall design is great. Kinda of like a mix of early Taito cab and King of Fighters or something cab. It's the cosmetic features that are the issue.
