Bid several times, over and over, to scare others away?

My guess is that they're trying to make their auction look more trafficked than it really is, making it look like a hot deal to attract others to bid.

I haven't used e-bay in years and years though.

Maybe decided to increase the bid each time which would always show as the first highest bid?

Yeah. Another one is bidding the asking price early to try and make it look to other people like they won't be able to get it for around the asking price and then sniping on top of it in the last few seconds. People try all sorts of stuff, but a lot of it can backfire, like putting a bunch of bids on something could make it catch more people's attention by looking like a more desired item, or it could start a bid war and people start realizing that they would pay more for an item than they otherwise would have and you end up paying more than you would have had to.

Stupid tactics on ebay.

Shill bidding. I once bought a pair of speakers of some clown who put a zero point bid in at the last minute. He contacted me to say that the other bidder pulled out of the deal. Problem for him was that I one by a paltry five dollars. I won. (Paid $167 for a pair of Meridian A500 front speakers. Retailed new for $3000 and sound great).

I bid early on an original NOS remote control for a new model flat screen TV that a mates prt cockatoo had eaten.
Damn seller put a zero point bid on top.

Knowing that I wouldn't get another original remote for that model TV (NEC LED) I bid one dollar till I reached his bid. 25 bids of one dollar each, and then told seller I wouldnt bid again so dont bother shilling me again.
I won. New remote $35 + postage. (cost new $160)

Bought some new Stainless Steel braided brake lines for car.
Canadian seller. I paid ridiculous postage of $120 for air and tracked postage to Australia. Did not recieve package. Seller told me he had sent it.

He had as it turned out, the package was adrdressed to a fictional address and was sent three weeks late.

Tried to put complaint into ebay. was given about 5 seconds to compose a note explaining problem when each time the page timed out. Couldn't flag as not recieved and leave reason for request for credit. (Ebay's Guarantee). Gave up trying after 30th attempt.

Tried phoning company - no customer service phone numbers listed or email addresses for a complaints department.

Two months later I got an email from the courier company that the package had been sent to ficticious address in Australia; made up non existant suburb name and wrong street name, and that the package had been returned to seller in Canada.
Cost to me $325, no refund, not happy...

After five months of inactivity on my account Ebay contacted me to answer questionaire. the email had contact details via an email address for a real person at the company.

Sent compliant to ebay, who responded to the proof by delisting seller (Copy of email with number for tracked parcel). I got no refund.

Now I only bid if seller has 100% feedback, will post by standard signed for postage, and there are no shill bidders, and I have learned that it is better to bid late or never.

And if someone tells me that they want to ship by XYZ Courier company that charges three times the going rate for postage to my country - I dont buy.

Ebay, if your watching, how about a real contactable complaints department.

See attachment but you have to have complaints done within 45 days for refunds, no exceptions. The little eBay message might say contact us by x day (will be ~2 months) but make no mistake, it's 45 days if you want a chance at a refund, do the calculations yourself from the day you paid or the auction ended. 45.

Looks like the original bidder won!?!?!?!?!

I don't think this was 'shill bidding,' I think he just bid a bunch of times to scare people off.

Is this not just what happens with automatic bidding. Someone else keeps bidding $0.25 more manually, and then ebay automatically bids more for the other person.

If you have schematics for discrete sound games not easily found on the net, I would be interested.

It should show the other person's bids on there if someone else bid, afaik.

I'm pretty sure automatic bids are not shown unless you click "show automatic bids"...

I figured it out new [Re: PokeMAME]
#239700 - 11/25/10 04:14 AM

Since I did this myself.

Saw an item, had only 3 bids, was dirt cheap.

I put in a maximim bid. A pop-up said I am the highest bidder, but reserve not yet met, had an option to increase my maximum bid. My listed current bid was only $2 more than the bid I saw when I started, not my maximum bid.

So I put in another higher maximum bid (thinking that's what ebay meant when they said reserve not met). Again, said I won but reserve not met.

So again... I put in another higher maximum bid... and again said reserve not met.

Then I said screw it. Out of curiousity, I looked at the bid history. I'm now listed there three times, same low price of only $2 more than the bid I saw when it started. Ebay's automated bidding thingy will only increase your bid by a couple dollars to beat out the last guy... why it doesn't jump up to the reserve I dunno. It also lists each increased maximum as a separate bid, even though they all list at the same price. Stupid defect of ebay.

Edit:

I'll be curious when the bidding ends if I "win", and at what price... my highest maximum bid, or the lowest winning bid that beats the unknown reserve.
