Hello
I'm a SFIV PC gamer, and now im thinking in SFIII - -.
Can someone explain me how to obtain a legal rom for: Street Fighter III 3rd Strike: Fight for the Future (Japan, 990512, NO CD)? Correct me, if this is not the way to ask this.
I will be also trying GGPO.
Thanks.

Buy the real Arcade Board, then you are legally entitled to either dump/download a copy of the software.

That can't possibly be true because it isn't legal for a rom site to host them in the first place.

So the only way is to dump myself the software from the original hardware.
But, is there someone that can do that dificult process for me in exchange for money?

But I thought it was only illegal for the end user if he didn't own the original software?

There's nothing difficult about it, the CD part anyway. Buy a used CD on eBay for a few dollars and rip it onto your hard drive and then use chdman to convert it. If you're worried about the security cart chips too then I don't have a solution for you. If you buy it and open it up and tell me the chip type I could tell you a solution for dumping it but it would be more expensive than buying a full working SF3 board set.

Isn't it a bit risky too since the carts are very sensitive inside?

It is not legal for someone to host copyrighted video games for random people to download on their site without getting permission from the copyright owners. I don't know how you could have thought that was legal.

For sure, the cart would become toast if it wasn't already suicided to begin with.

No, I know it's illegal to host ROMs, but I've been told that if I was to download my MegaDrive collection into a binary format, technicly it's legal for me to use since I own the original software

It might be legal for you to own it, the subject was the downloading process.

I'm not giving legal advice but I wouldn't kill a cart to dump something that is already dumped, no.

But if he had the security card and CD-ROM of SF3, then legally he could keep a backup copy of the data for the two for use in MAME.
I originally meant that it was legal to own a copy of the images

Excellent. This is the one that is suposelly suppoted by GGPO: "Street Fighter III 3rd Strike: Fight for the Future (Japan, 990512, NO CD)".
Can you point me what is the correct product and a bet in eBay?
Thanks, for your help.

There might still be some stupid rule in the laws of some countries where you are supposed to actually make the backup copy yourself. Anyway, you should read up on laws or mention that you aren't sure when you answer questions about them.

The No CD one is a special cart version that, as you can imagine, didn't use a CD. Your best bet would be finding it on Yahoo Japan using a machine translator and then paying a deputy service to bid for you, but you might be able to find it on eBay. SFIII cart prices, no idea, they are usually always broken on eBay and nobody selling on eBay seems to ever know which specific revision they are/were.

It's only legal if you made the dump yourself from the actual copies you owned. (And then only in the US - AFAIK in Europe even that's not allowed).

Only if it is a 100% match for your binary ROM data. For example, if every game had a serial number and you owned Super Mario 1 #1417372, it would be illegal to download Super Mario 1 #880523, even if the actual program code was 100% the same, since you don't own copy #880523. Note of course, NES games do not have a serial number in the ROM itself (however, they do have a unique number printed on each chip!), just an example. I'm pretty sure PS2 BIOSes might actually be unique to each console though, according to NGEmu anyway (I wouldn't trust NGEmu or its ROM kiddies for references though)...

Excuse my ingorance. But, how I do that? Or, can you give me more information?
Thanks.
