LOTRO calling
#238926 - 11/15/10 01:37 AM

I've always dodged MMORPGs, for personal reasons (try to guess if you want). However someone at a gaming site called my attention talking about The Lord Of The Rings Online, which has become free:
http://www.lotro.com/free.php?

I have played 28 hours in 2 days (now the guess is easy). Playing for free is somewhat restricting but there are plenty of things to do and discover even for free players. You earn points to buy special stuff just by playing, so no need to spent a cent.

The only down I can think of is that you get a 2mb installed which needs to download a 10gb installer (took me 4-5 hours), which in turn installs the client for about 12gb in a looooong installing process.

Well, there's another down... Choose your password carefully, because you have to type/paste it into the client everytime you play. If you want to change your password, you have to write a lot of info in your account. And you can't separate the normal game messages from the chatting of other users in whatever channels you're automatically connected (depends on your map position, level, locale, etc.) Other than that, the game is sweet, rich and there are so many sidequests and things to do and explore that the quality/price ratio is unbeatable.

I'm a solo gamer, but if you see me, say hi.

I avoid RPG's too for the same reason. Any strategy building game for that matter. That's why MAME fits me so well... nothing takes me until 4am to "finish".

However I got too hooked on and the content is somewhat restricted when reaching level 20-23, so even when you can fully enjoy several free regions and the epic quest line until level 50 (which is a long way to go and a lot of free content) I just got fed up and left it for next month or maybe next year. I gave all my valuable objects to someone I met there and left my character sleeping in the hobbit-size bedroom at the Prancing Pony.

However it's such a great game, absolutely amazing.
