CHDMAN for Ubuntu
#238862 - 11/13/10 10:13 PM
|
|
|
Normally I wouldn't ask for this, mainly because I despise using Linux, but I need a compatible CHDman to re-image one of my hard disks. Basically it's starting to fail but it still works for now, but since all other spare disks are dead/dying, I imaged a CHD of it just in case, but since the kernel died on Windows and I don't feel like reinstalling, I switched to Ubuntu to use my PC for now.
Thanks for any help.

Huh? You can image a disk with so many other tools. For example, under Linux just use 'dd'. (Or here)

If I understand what you mean, it's too late to make an image, but I want to write the already existing CHD and not waste more space on my low capacity drives

If I understand this correctly, you used CHDMAN to make a CHD of your Windows system disk and now want to restore from that CHD, yes?
There are a couple of ways that this might be possible, but more info would be helpful.

There's even `dd` for Windows - this has been useful a number of times in my experience.

That's what I'm trying to say, yes.
My system failed today and I was planning to update the CHD image, but since Windows packed it in, I've set up a network server (My WiFi card isn't supported on Ubuntu) to get some help. Currently I have no reliable drives, apart from one SATA drive, but my main PC doesn't have a SATA port, I have to use a USB converter. The idea is to use the Ubuntu CD as long as I need to until I can either get a SATA to IDE or a new IDE drive, then image the drive with the CHD image from Ubuntu.

Which version of CHDMAN did you use? Might be important if you used an older version.
Which version of Ubuntu are you running? I have amd64 binaries of CHDMAN compiled under Ubuntu or Mint going back quite a few versions.

Decided to bite the bullet and use one of my failing disks as a temp Win 7 install to get the CHD atleast updated for now. Hopefully by Christmas I can get something sorted

Sorry it took me so long. Not sure if you even need this anymore.
Had problems cross-compiling an i386 version on my desktop at home, so I booted up a Linux Mint 9 i386 virtual machine at work, and built the tools. Linux Mint 9 should be equivalent to Ubuntu Lucid Lynx; sorry, it was all I had available.
Let me know if it works for you.
