video editing advice needed

Here's the deal...
I have a song from a band that I really like. There is no official video, but there are a bunch of live performances on YouTube with lousy audio.
I would like to try to line up the audio studio audio with one of the live videos ripped from YouTube. I think it should be close but I might need to slow down the video slightly to make it sync up better.
I can rip the video from YouTube using DownloadHelper (Firefox plugin) in FLV format.
Then I split out the video and audio using FLV Extract.
Here's where I'm stuck.
The extracted video is in ".264" format, which is guess is H.264 or something. The new audio is in MP3 format but I can easily convert this to WAV if it would help.
I've tried to find some free video editing tools, but most are pretty lame or don't work at all with the video format I have.
I attempted to convert it to an MPEG (1?) AVI, then loaded it up in VirtualDub, but I couldn't get the audio shifted enough to start in the right spot on the video. Plus, the converted video looked much worse than the original, AND had a watermark since it was a free converter.
What options, if any do I have to do this with free tools?

You don't need a plugin anymore. Look to the bottom right of the video, there should be a download as option. Download as mp4 and drag the file into Vegas Pro. Mute the audio track with the button to the left of it (circle with a cross through) and drag in your audio file to a new track below it and line it up as best as possible. Highlight the video track and choose Insert/Video Envelopes/Event Velocity. Right click on the areas of the video track where you want it to slow down or speed up and choose Add Point. Then drag and move the sections in between them to suit and experiment with points and such. If you want a freeware program you're on your own...

No. You can apply these same techniques to cheaper programs though, but I can't give you specifics for them because I don't waste my time on use them. Time line audio and video editing programs have all had the same general rules since Cakewalk in the 90's. Only new options have been added and you go to different menus to get to stuff, they name things differently, some options are missing from some, max quality, HD capabilities etc.
