Need Wi-Fi advice
#236525 - 10/16/10 05:17 PM

Thinking of setting up a wireless router in my apartment. I'm going in blind, so ease-of-use would be a plus, but I'm really just interested in something that works well. Any recommended brands/models?

This is what I have and I love it...

Linksys WRT54GL + 2 9-inch high-gain antennas + DD-WRT open source firmware = WIN

However, if you want something that does "N", he also sells this kit...

...in fact, I'm eying it up as a possible replacement for the one I have once I get more "N" capable devices.

I asked that same Q here last year... I followed RB's advice and went with the Airport Extreme, and glad for it.

Linksys is a good choice. Their wired routers (RVS4000) and other equipment also rock.

Linksys is decent for the average user, but their equipment tended to run hot and wasn't very robust last I used them. That might have improved since my last use though.

Probably depends on the model. I have a Linksys wireless router that I bought as a refurb from Newegg. It looked new to me and works great. I don't notice it getting hot. My Motorola DSL modem gets pretty warm though.

DLink DIR-655 still working like a champ after nearly two years! Within the same time period, I'd gone through two cheap Linksys wireless routers.
