MAME and online multiplayer with old arcade games...
#235172 - 09/30/10 10:18 PM

Hello.

Has MAME's multiplayer scene improved since Kaillera? I liked Kaillera when it was active and updated to play old arcade games from the 80s and early 90s like Gauntlet, Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat, etc.

I did try other third party clients that use old Kaillera, but I couldn't find people to play old classic arcade games. Yes, I am an old fart.

Thank you in advance.

Client Server Mame is very very promising but keep in mind it is also very new so it's gonna take time to build a "Kaillera-like" following.

Every time someone mentions K-shit, MAMEdev decides not to work on Sega games.

That alone should help CSMAME's popularity.

Ahem. At the risk of setting back Sega progress an entire decade, let me see if I have this straight:

There are three basic problems with the "K-shit" as you put it.

1. Closed source implementation, incompatible with MAME license.
2. Security flaws in the implementation.
3. Inefficient, bad design.

From what I understand, there is an open source reimplementation of the client and server that resolves #1 and #2, but #3 is inherent to how the system works.

Am I missing anything? (And I do apologize for killing Sega progress for at least another month..)

I don't understand why you wish to belabor the point. ClientServerMAME does things the right way. You have MAMEdev's blessing, for the first time in history, to play MAME online with it. Just go do so.

Oh, but I'm not. Don't misunderstand, I think K is the worst implementation ever done.

I wanted to make sure of the reasons why the MAME devs were using, and check my memory against it. I've always spoke out against K, personally-- once the security issues came to light, it was clearly dangerous.

Skip the other program and go with MAMEHub. It should be used instead since it is done properly.

R. Belmont's threat that he would probably make good on:

That's funny.

So yeah, first of all, re-read this whole thread. In flat mode, preferably. So that you understand what and why. (Firehawke lays it out pretty well)

Secondly, go try and become a fan of CSMAME and MAMEHub.

Ah. Ooh, this looks potiential. I liked Kaillera, but it is so old and outdated. It was awesome to play old school 1980s/80s arcades on the Internet. Too bad MAMEhub is new and doesn't have many players. It looks good so far even though the usability is weird (so many windows). I assume it is crossplatform online (Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux users can play online together).

Yep. Those MAMEDEV who have looked at it so far have liked it because:
a. it's cross-platform
b. it's open-source
c. its architecture was done "the right way" or pretty close
d. the author is involved in developing it

For a gamer like you, it's early days, which is a good thing: its community has yet to grow, and the author is taking suggestions. For example, regarding features and UI: http://10ghost.blogspot.com/2011/04/working-on-new-ui.html
So you can get involved and start using it.

And yet it is very developed. Anyone not immensely, or even lightly, impressed should go into the freezer for a year or two.
