They'd have to be pretty confident that she was lying to actually lay charges - if they weren't, the investigation would just be quietly dropped. But why would you make a false report like that? What does she actually gain from it? She's wasted police time, scared the community for nothing, got the possibility of criminal charges. But I can't work out what she thought she stood to gain from it.
