A couple of things....
first of all, you registered an account today. Second, you expect an answer almost immediately. Third, you're buying Mame, bundled with games...illegal and frowned upon here...you need to tell whoever you're buying from that they shouldn't be doing that and you're getting ripped off.
To answer your actual question, I'm sure it's fine but personally I'd go with Windows XP, but that's my own opinion. And lastly no knock in being a newb but I'm assuming that with the setup you posted you're going to expect every game you have to play at full speed with accurate emulation. I can tell you preemptively that you shouldn't expect it, nor will you get it.

ok cool sorry I did not know any of that. I understand it wont work perfectly. So I am curious what can I change besides the OS. faster processor? more memory? what will make everything work nicely? Sorry I am a total newb at this.

Your specs are fine for most games, but again you paid for Mame...something that you shouldn't have done, and whoever sold it to you is doing something wrong. they should not be profiting for this and although *I* won't go after him/her or you it's not right on either end.

well I havent yet. It is something OI was planning on doing. Again I had no idea. I am very new to all this bro. I can look into alternatives. I am still learning. You said the specs wouldnt run everything so I am willing to add what I need. Again I am sorry for offending you. I have literally been learning as I have gone. I must have got some bad info

no, you don't need ArcadeVGA card. it's for running MAME on 15Khz arcade CRT monitors. you need any modern video card with needed outputs (HDMI, DVI or VGA) - which will connect with your monitor.

First of all, 3GB of ram for Win7x64? That is incredibly weak. 4GB absolute minimum, but I'd recommend 8GB personally. Don't get those 1GB sticks either, 2GB sticks as a min, but that is a preference thing - I'd get 2 4GB sticks.
Secondly, get a setup that gets you a standalone graphics card, not integrated graphics.

First off, if you can manage it don't buy a pre-built system, build your own. You can build a system with better components at 2/3rds the cost. Its not as hard as you think. Most stuff from groups like Dell are half a generation to a full generation old anyway and from cut rate manufactures to boot.
Next, some games in MAME are so complex that there is not a PC in the world that can emulate them at full speed. You could drop $10k on the latest and greatest PC in the world and still not play them full speed. Most games will play fine but some newer and/or 3D games wont.
Also, if you want a complete MAME collection 640 GB isn't going to be enough to future proof your system. A current set will take up about 150 GB but that amount will balloon when laser disc games are fully supported.
On a related note. If you want MAME you can get a current build at mamedev.org for free. As for ROMS, well, lets just say you should learn how to use BitTorrent and start looking for some good trackers. Google is a good start. Hope you have broadband, like I said a current complete set is about 150 gigs and thats not counting extra like title shots and cabinet artwork.

Aside from the including MAME and games part, this is fine if you don't expect to play 3D games like Tekken or Soul Calibur. (Those would require an Intel Core 2 processor at 3.2 or more GHz).
Contrary to popular belief, 64-bit OSes run OK with 2 GB of RAM, and 3 should give you a decent "shoulder". You only need more than 4 GB for doing development.
Also, ignore the Luddite who says you should use XP. Modern MAME is designed for and runs best on 64-bit Windows 7. Period. You get a free 20% speedup across almost all games for using 64-bit Win7.

Thanks for all the answers guys. I am sort of hamstringed with dell as I have an account with available credit. Here is what i changed how will this work? Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64Bit Processors Intel® Core™ i5-650 processor(4MB Cache, 3.20GHz) OXI5650 Memory 3GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz Keyboard Dell Studio Consumer Multimedia Keyboard Video Card nVIDIA GeForce G310 512MB DDR3 G310 Hard Drive 640GB - 7200RPM, SATA 3.0Gb/s, 16MB Cache
I can change to 750 or 1tb also can change to 4g memory. should I pay the extra for that? Is the video card ok now? I am putting this on an arcade monitor. using an arcadevga card. so will my video card matter much?

If you are gonna use an ArcadeVGA, not really, in that case, if you can't opt to have no graphics card, then go for the cheapest or one you want as a spare for anything.
3GBs is fine for most games, but keep a mind for future. I believe the biggest Memory usage is probably Naomi-GD games (that work anyway), since they use about 1.2~1.5 GBs of memory *prepares for dev*. But other than that, should be fine.
640GB is fine for now, but again, make an idea for future. If you are like me and download only the ones you want to play, then that's fine, but if you want the whole collection, maybe a bigger space again for future.

I edited my original post. Processor should be fine for most older games and some of the 90's games. Some games (1993~200) wouldn't run full speed on the best consumer PC anyway

Should be good for a couple of years, and I mena a couple, MAME will probably get bigger, it will need more CPU power and hopefully more good dumps of games will be availible, but then, hardware gets cheaper too

LOL. Well if I do not need that video card. IF it truly doesnt matter since you have helped me. If a few more people say i wont need it and the guy helping me says I dont need it. i will pull it out and send it to you. I have no problem with that. This machine will be put permanently into this arcade.

Well, if you're using a true Arcade Monitor, using a 31khz card can kill it, unless it's a 31khz one, but normally they're 15khz, so... if you find out the model number and then find the documentation, I'm sure it will say what the frequency is, or what res (15 - Low Res, 24 - Medium Res, 31 - High Res)

Ok so Im going to upgrade the memory to 4gb but stay with 640 gig. I can always change the harddrive later. it is 75 dollars more for the hard drive to go to 750. And 640 will hold what im putting in it. but I guess the 4gb will make it a little better performance??

OK so basically I am sitting here about to order this thing. And I am agonizing over the memory. 3gb? 4gb? 6gb? Cannot seem to get a straight answer. will 6gb make a huge difference from 4? will 4 make a huge difference from 3?

Oh, come on.... at least try to include a reference before making (obsolete?) assumptions. NFL Blitz seems to be very playable according to John.

If you want to play on a 15 hz monitor why not use an old found working pc. Rip the guts out of the case. Mount neatly inside your machine. A Pentium 4 with a 200gb drive running a cracked version of windows, 2 Gb of cheap ram, an Arcade VGA and a j-pac or i-pac and a cheap set of speakers will run pretty much any arcade game that you want on an old arcade machine. Buy a new machine for cruising the net, 3D games and 3D rendering or something. Just stick some cheap ex office PC that you found at the dump in your arcade machine. It will save you cash that you could donate to Smittdogg or Guru or Dr.Decapitator to buy, dump and emulate some new games in MAME. (or even get a life!) Even a Pentium 4 running 2Gb hiding away in an dusty old arcade machine running a 15 hz monitor is overkill. What did you want to play?

Not every arcade game. Especially Blitz. Listen, it will run older games fine, even when you have a battered 1.8GHz one and a load of software to run, but don't make assumptions like i did....
EDIT: And Blitz aint good for a P4, max i get is about 20%

Well my friend, this is the internet, you can always go back and visit the mistakes you made earlier in case you need a reminder!
I've always used my real name so for me this is quite painful, you can still find newsgroup posts from ~10 years ago where I proudly state that Afterburner ran off of a CD for example. That was one of the more innocent mistakes of course.

Yeah, "Live and Learn".
I've atleast managed to clean my Gamecube and N64 and get rid of the heat making dirt after a PS2 attempt that killed the PSU Board.

Not really. Cleaning the PS2 out, forgot that the PSU always keeps a charge in the Caps. I've been electrocuted twice by one, and one arcaed massive accros a loudspeaker and killed the PSU.

I was referring to the fact that the discussion was about recommendations for a computer so the cleaning of your PS2 seemed random...
since we're off topic now anyways... I was working inside a direct tv receiver and didn't know that the yellow portion of the board was high-voltage and damn that hurt. I am used to the high-voltage section being covered up... I won't do that again....

You are likely thinking of modern multi-core CPUs too though.
Are not all Intel 64 bit CPUs at least dual core though (speaking of earliest hardware)?
Anyway, that old hardware would need no more than 4GB even with Windows7. Modern CPUs and most system offerings these days start at around 6GB though, and mine is 8GB, and I don't know who is making his system, but $80 for 1GB change is a gouge flag to me.
MY current XBMC PLUS Mame, PLUS Unbuntu, PLUS desktop system is a Zotac H55 with an i5 660 and 8GB 1333MHz RAM and a 2TB 7200RPM HD, all stuffed inside an ITX box that looks like a mini tower in a photo, but it is like half the size, and fits on my desktop!
You should see what I went through to get everything packed in there. Then, I added $20 worth of fans to that. Good thing the case was only $39. It took nearly a week to put together though, so it isn't a basic assembly and it is very easy to block fans upon closure and other little 'technical' nasties.
Here is the entire build. I think it was about $1100 invested
http://www.mediafire.com/?8jdiyc6kp5dzb
How cool. I have XP on it, and Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat. I get better video rendering under Windows and MameUI than I do in Linux. I must just need to get my video settings right. After I make my Ubuntu Maverick MAMEKat Live disk, I will ty it out on my Acer Revo andsee if it playes well on that. It too has XP and Ubuntu on it, but that is my XBMC box.
Anyway 4GB and XP is plenty on an old 64bit machine, especially if it will be single use dedicated. If one wants to actually use the box as a desktop as well, then a newer machine and Windows 7 Ultimate and 8GB RAM, etc. etc. IS appropriate.
It is like the folks that say you'll gain 30 Lbs a year if you drink 4 Sodas a day. I'd be dead already and buried in a piano case if that were true. Not everyone has the same metabolism.
Those old boxes and the motherboards in them simply would not garner much gain between having 4GB and 8GB RAM in them, even under Windows 7, because it too would step back performance enhancements on older hardware. JMDOHO (Just My Dumb Old Hippie Opinion).

Also you should check whether the roms are compatible with the newer mame versions or else you might see a significant number off the list and have wasted space.
You could also try a mame version optimized for amd ( 0.120u4 latest build). It gives an increase in more demanding games
If you run some games in zinc instead of mame (get the zinc rom versions) or naomi emulators the processor would be fine.
But buying a new pc for mame games and overclocking the processor is a little extreme.

Actually it's more likely to help with the less demanding games.
CPU optimized builds are highly overrated. You'll see less than a 10FPS increase which for the most part will not be enough to make "more demanding games" playable anyway.
Besides buying a Core 2 Duo E8600 (still the fastest CPU for MAME AFAIK) the best thing you can do for speed is using 64-bit MAME. That'll get you up to 20% speed increase in some games, such as Namcos Prop Cycle, games that run on the ST-V platform and a handful others.

Has anyone tried an Intel Core i7 980X? It's 3.33 GHz like the Core 2 Duo E8600, but it has six cores instead of 2. Of course, the $999 price tag does sting a bit.

I am using a low end processor for todays standards (Amd 3600+ x2) and tried the 64-bit version on Windows 7 (MameUI) and in it games were not so smooth as in Windows XP MameUI.
It may gain an advantage but it is lost from the higher requirements of Windows 7. x86 version was a little better but not as in XP.
64-bit MAME makes a difference in average to high end desktop processors.

MAME developers would like to own this processor. MAME players will see no benefit and waste electricity for nothing. Extreme gamers on the other hand with their 4xSLI cards and their 1500 Watt PSU will feast. But for 999 you could buy a decent MAME arcade board.

Some searching reveals that there were "Extreme" versions of the Core 2 Duo processor at one point. According to cpubenchmark.net (which can give a very rough indication of performance) the fastest of these were more than 50% faster than Core 2 Duo E8600.
Anyone have any experience with these processors?

The major benefit of the Extreme versions tended to be either more cores, a higher clock, or both. The higher clock's good for MAME, but you can typically match or beat those clocks with a ~$200 Core 2 instead of the $999+ for the Extreme Edition.

You're thinking of the Quad Core extremes.
If we're comparing Dual Core CPUs, the Conroe X6800 doesn't stand a chance against the Wolfdale E8600: http://ark.intel.com/Compare.aspx?ids=27258,35605
The E8600 is factory clocked higher, has more cache, can run at a higher FSB, uses less energy, generates less heat and is probably still cheaper to buy today.

No. According to my research, the Core 2 Duo Extremes had 12 MB cache. They are just like the E8600 you are talking about, with higher clock rates and twice the cache - hence likely to be faster.

I have a Core 2 Extreme X9000 on my Dragon. CPU-Z shows the L2 cache as 6MB (L1 is 2 X 32K each for data and instruction). It is clocked at 2.8GHz.

http://ark.intel.com/ProductCollection.aspx?familyID=34522&MarketSegment=DT X6800 - 2MB/core = 4MB QX6700 - 2MB/core = 8MB QX6800 - 2MB/core = 8MB QX6850 - 2MB/core = 8MB QX9650 - 3MB/core = 12MB QX9770 - 3MB/core = 12MB QX9775 - 3MB/core = 12MB
Bryan, you're thinking of the quad-cores. Core 2 != only dual-core.

Thanks for the correction. I swear I had read some documentation on Intel's site that indicated otherwise, but I probably just misread.
So yeah, I don't see any advantage of these 'extreme' Core 2 Duos over the stock E8600.

i also like to add that using latest mame on ubuntu (lucid,amd64 version) with mamepgui it performs much smoother than windows 7 and xp.
Can anyone confirm whether mame in linux is faster than windows 7 on intel processors as well?

That comparison varies wildly depending on how good you are at configuring both OSes, but as a baseline on the same machine they're usually equal to within 5%, regardless of processor.

Intel chips do run MAME faster regardless of OS, but that was not his question, which was if OS-specific performance differences carried across processors.

I can confirm that.
recently I upgraded the computer to an i3 560 3.2 Ghz, not overclocked yet.
I used on Windows 7 64bit on mame64 (140u1) the command line for gradius 4 benchmark :
mame -noautoframeskip -frameskip 0 -seconds_to_run 100 -nothrottle -nosleep -video ddraw -skip_gameinfo -effect none -nowaitvsync -noreadconfig gradius4
end framerate result was 104 fps.
On Ubuntu on sdlmame (140u1) I had to type opengl instead of ddraw and it reached 109 fps and 111 with compiz disabled.
Probably I have to compile a version for myself for better results.

I'd like to read and contribute to many old threads, articles and pages that do not exist anymore (eg Geocities)
Besides if anyone cares about MAME and i3 5xx CPUs, I overclocked it for a few minutes to 4 Ghz and in SDLMAME got on Gradius 4 a benchmark of 132 fps. Not bad

Yes, 4 GB gives you some headroom.
>but stay with 640 gig. I can always > change the harddrive later. it is 75 dollars more for the hard drive to go to 750.
That's a complete rip off (unless you're talking a high speed raptor or similar). You should be able to buy a brand new 1 TB drive for about $75 - not upgrade a 640 GB to a 750 GB.
Here's some prices from where I buy some of my PC gear (Australia): http://www.gamedude.com.au/
* hddWE1tbsata_64green Western Digital 1TB 7200rpm SATAII RS 64meg Cache GREEN POWER Model: WD10EARS $ 63
* hddSE1tb_sata32 SeaGate 1TB 7200rpm SATA-2 NCQ 32meg Cache Barracuda 7200.12 Model: ST31000528AS $ 68 * hddWE2tbsata_64green Western Digital 2TB 7200rpm SATAII RS 64meg Cache GREEN POWER Model: WD20EARS $ 107
* hddSE2tb_sata32 SeaGate 2TB 5900rpm SATA-2 NCQ 32meg Cache Barracuda LP Model: ST32000542AS $ 119
Prices is the USA are typically quite a bit less.
Good luck !

It depends, do you really need a binary copy of every single game ever made in existence? I don't think there has been one person in the history of MAMEkind who has started from the top of the list and completed every single arcade game and clone from start to finish - '88 Games right down to Zzyzzyxx set 2, non-working games, black screen/crash-on-load games and all.
4GB will be fine for Windows 7 to do its useless background crap, although you could technically get away with less than 1GB if you made a 'clean' build of Windows and disabled 99% of the unneeded 'services' it provides (although I am talking from an XP/Vista perspective here).
