LED Ticker fron a Golden Tee Cab - Programming Software/Wiring
#185298 - 03/17/09 01:19 PM

Hi All,

I'm in need of help with the Red LED Ticker Display which sits in the top of my Golden Tee Cab. Its now mame, but I can't get it to take any messages, it just resets itself into a test mode.

I've tried, I think, most of the available software that programs Tickers made by BetaTech.

It works (diplays ok)......but not sure how it was fed the information to display the words, was it preloaded on the ticker roms or did the information come from the game board.

The tickers only input port is a phone/modem port, the cable that was in the machine looks to be a standard modem type, I have it connected to my pc through the serial port using a RS-232 to modem cable type of connector, which I bought as this is what is used on other tickers to function from a pc (shop diplays etc). (I have tried both the new cable that came with the rs-232 unit and the old one)

I'm not wanting it to display the games names, though that would be cool, just want it to scroll some pre-programmed messages.

Sorry for the long post, if anyone has any ideas, I would like to hear them.

Could the wiring be non standard to the ticker board?

Cheers.

I don't know off the top of my head, but it might help people to specify which generation of Golden Tee - 68020 (original through Classic), Eagle (GT Fore! series), or PC-based (GT Live! series)?

If I understand your problem correctly, you have a Golden Tee Golf cab and have converted it to MAME? If yes, you can't drive the external LED ticker from a computer without additional hardware and software support. You will at least need to hook up an external connection to the serial port and interface that to the ticker with software. AFAIK MAME does not emulate the ticker commands. Maybe it does, but it's not going to work unless it's interfaced properly. It's the same thing with some driving games. If you convert a driving cab to MAME there would be no feedback for the same reason... the feedback commands are not emulated because it's driven by an external PCB in the cab.
MAME works fine as-is, but when you have additional external hardware to drive, MAME is no good by itself without additional software AND hardware support.

Having said that, if the ticker displays words by itself then everything is internal to the ticker hardware unit. If the ticker responds to events in the game then the info comes from the PCB via the serial link.

The marquees all ran on there own driver boards, which there were 6 or 7 revisions of. I believe IT did away with sending information to them after the old dial up tournament system was done away with. 'Fore' was probably the last release that supported them in any way (possibly 'complete', but i doubt it.)

Pinouts on the RJ-12 end of the serial connector are NOT betabrite or alphanet standard. I've been working on communication with these, but as of right now there really isn't on the fly control, it's a complete reprogram/restart every time you want to change the message.

You can alter the sign information by dumping the eprom data and altering the text (hex) in either the sign test or preprogramed message currently in the eprom.
