Our .info hosting company has a huge folding team and it would be pretty cool if we can help out the cause (medical research) - especially with the crazy powerful machines the MAME community has to offer...

Download Client Here: http://folding.stanford.edu
User Name: mameworld.info Team Number: 122600
So just grab the client and help us shoot up in the rankings, you won't even notice it running - thanks!

It's TRUE! She has her server working folding@home at night after hours, just to help out.

This definitely is more productive than looking for extraterrestrial signals in space with near zero chance of success... or looking for a largest prime number. :P

Yeah, no doubt. I wouldn't even bother with the rest - especially the prime number one. Their app is nice for testing stability on overclocks but the project itself is kind of iffy in importance. Well, they do claim that such prime numbers will help with encryption or whatnot...but still. This one could theoretically save lives at least.

That's just your opinion. I'm the one who gets to decide how to use my CPU cycles most productively!

A good reason NOT to use CPU for the prime number project. Imagine what it will be to emulate in MAME an arcade running it.... ;-)

What's nice about the app is that you don't have to have the CPU pegged 100% if you don't want to. There's a slider which can set the percentage to whatever is preferred.
A 50% load for example won't generate all that much heat. But if the ambient temp of the room is already very warm due to summer weather, then just scale it back to use 25% or whatnot. Every little bit helps in the long run.

The number crunching doesn't find cures. It's really to better understand how the diseases work so that cures can then be created from the knowledge gained.

I've touched a nerve there, haven't i? Sorry about that, it was not the intention. About the picture... well, it's not mine but from xkcd.com. I just though it was adequate to the topic.
And yeah personally thinking, i would help a cause for curing deceases rather than analyzing possible extraterrestrial signals. Then assuming a success, wait at least 2 centuries or more to make contact (or at least send/receive a message from/to us). I won't live that long, without mentioning i would die earlier by cancer or something.
Just going for what it's more probable to success, everyone decides by its own interests.

Now at 42 with great momentum
http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=122600
The entire team itself is also moving higher at a fast pace.
I've had an inquiry into why we just don't make our own team - the answer is simple - we'd likely never crack higher than 10,000th or so. Much more fun to catch a ride on a powerful super-team which has a real shot at being in the top 100 within a few months.
Anyhow, just keep those CPU cycles flowing

I'll consider it once they finally put the support for CUDA in (which is "soon", it seems). GPUs can swamp CPUs for Folding@Home outputs _easily_, but right now only ATi ones (hint, ATi card users: if you're comfortable about it, see if you can do this instead of using the CPU). My video card's left out right now :<

Count me in! Let's try to get as many WU's as we can.
Kranser.

If we can just get at least 5 more machines helping out, we'll power right into the top 20 within the team in no time
BTW thanks to all those who have already joined and given us a nice boost!

The NVIDIA GPU folding client for any 8xxx or 9xxx series graphics cards is finally available for Windows
http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/release/[email protected]
You'll also need to use the official NVIDIA driver version 174.55 or higher, right here:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_get.html
Reports are coming out that this destroys even the PS3, which is incredible
Quote:
The new GeForce cards are expected to hit more than 650 nanoseconds of protein simulation in a single day, while the Radeon HD 3870 is stuck at about 170 ns. The Playstation 3 is able to produce "only" 100 ns of simulation, while a quad-core CPU creates an output of just four nanoseconds. For those who are keeping count: The GeForce GPU will be about 163 times faster than a quad-core processor in this specific application.

I've been using a newer driver (175.16) which works just as well and as a bonus doesn't cripple Future Pinball's performance like the old drivers did (it would have been nice if the drivers were working well to begin with, but OH WELL).
Work units get done stupidly fast - around one every 50-60 minutes for ones sized 5000 - and this is just an 8800GS.
I started running it late last night, but the Linuxites I know were a bit irritated that this beta is Windows-only right now.

Yeah, the PS3 client's always had those. (Mine folds for the mighty team 33 when I'm not playing games or SDLMAME - sorry guys ;-)

yeah.. the GPU one does them fast, I gave it a try.. the problem is their servers are completely swamped, I have a whole bunch of WUs done here and it simply can't connect to their servers to send them. Looking at the forums it seems like a common problem, but since these time-out if they're not sent in good time it seems like a horrible waste.
