since the xml encoding (-listxml output) is utf-8, and zip/7z/modern filesystems support it, you should be able to handle utf-8 names.

MAME's -listxml output gives you the affected sets ...and you need to unpack/sha1 calc/compare them yourself ;-) no need to do this for all sets...jus ...
