MAME Content Manager FAQ

Q: Why did you write MCM?  Why would I need it?
A: I wrote it because my young nephews like to play games on my MAME cabinet, and I don't think it appropriate that they see pictures of naked women in some of the games available in MAME.  I also wrote it because I hate Quiz and Mahjong games, and I wanted to delete them to save on my limited disk space.  With the addition of MCM.INI, MAME Content Manager provides unprecedented control over your ROMs collection.  Now you can block out ROMS based on year, language, category, adult content, etc.

Q: Where can I get the latest version of MCM?  Do you have an MCM home page?
A: http://www.mameworld.net/mcm

Q: When I run MCM, I get some error saying Zipdll.dll isn't found and was unloaded.  What's up with that?
A: Zipdll.dll is a file required by MCM.  It's distributed with MCM.  Put it in the same folder as MCM.Exe and the world will be at peace.

Q: When I run MCM, I get some error saying Zipdll.dll isn't the correct version.  What's up with that?
A: You probably have an older version of ZipDll on your hard drive.  Use the version included with the MCM executable, and delete any older version you might have.  ZipDLL.dll should reside in the same folder as MCM.EXE, but it doesn’t have to, as long as Windows can find it. The correct Zipdll.dll version for MCM 2.0 is version 1.78.1.10.  In Windows explorer, right-click Zipdll.dll, choose Properties, then go to the version tab to verify the version.

Q: Why did you only pick those specific categories of ROMS?  Can you add category _______?
A: I didn't pick any categories at all.  MCM gets all of its category information from the INI file (CATVER.INI or MCM.INI) that it uses.  I don't edit, create, or distribute CatVer.Ini, and I have no say as to what the categories are or which category a particular game is put in.  I recommend you use MCM.INI, which is a special INI file like CATVER but with much more information, created specifically for use with MCM.

Q: Where can I get MCM.Ini?
A: www.retroblast.com

Q: Where can I get CatVer.Ini?
A: There are 2 different versions, one at www.mameworld.net/catlist and one at http://www.catver.com

Q: Can you put in an option to remove all Non-English/Japanese ROMs?
A: Using MCM.INI, you can do this with MAME Content Manager.  You can’t do this using CATVER.INI.

Q: Can you add this new feature _______?
A: Possibly, send me an email and I'll see what can be done.

Q: What's your email address?
A: dgood@psea.org

Q: Can you send me some of your ROMS or data files?
A: No.

Q: Well then were can I get MAME Roms and stuff?
A: Try newsgroups like alt.games.mame or alt.binaries.emulators.mame

Q: Can I sell MCM?
A: No.

Q: Can I include MCM on a freeware CD I'm selling, or in another compilation?
A: Possibly.  Email me with details.

Q: Can I put MCM on my website for people to download?
A: Yes, but only if you include a link to http://www.mameworld.net/mcm (the official MCM home page) on the same page.

Q: I hate censorship! This program goes against free speech!
A: No, it doesn't.  It's a glorified file manager, nothing more.  Get off your soapbox.

Q: Can you put this new game into MAME?
A: No, I'm not part of the MAME development team.

Q: My virus scanner says MCM.exe is infected with some virus!  What's up??
A: MCM.Exe is compressed with UPX, same as the MAME executable is.  Some ancient virus scanners flag compressed executables as being infected.  Upgrade your virus scanner, because there is no virus in MCM.Exe.

Q: What programming language did you write MCM in?  Can I have the source code?
A: I used Borland Delphi.  The source code is not being distributed, as it relies heavily on commercial libraries that I've purchased and cannot give out.  Even if you had the source code, it would do you little good without those libraries.

Q: Are you going to add support for different languages in MCM?
A: It’s not on my to-do list.  If there’s enough demand I might put it at the bottom of my to-do list.

Q: All your content are belong to us?
A: KillerClown coined that one, and it stuck.  It's knock off of "All your base are belong to us", probably the most famous "Engrish" phrase ever to appear in a video game.  Search the web for it, you'll see...
