Tehkan / Centuri Pleiades missing in-game tune
#379440 - 11/09/18 12:33 PM

I was messing around with my own PCB recently and noticed the background tune during gameplay. Checking MAME out, the tune appears to be completely missing as far as I can tell (I've tested all of the ROM sets)

As Pleiades is a pseudo-sequel to Phoenix (which had its own little tune) , it should come as no surprise that this game also has a similar ditty playing in the background.

Perhaps if someone can confirm this, I can add the bug.

Check these YouTube videos out to confirm:

Interestingly, this version does NOT have the tune - strange.

Yes, this is perhaps the best known emulation flaw in history. Those games used a hardcoded IC intended for use in home doorbells rather than conventional audio hardware, so it's quite difficult to deal with.

Hi, I thought perhaps that maybe Phoenix and Pleiades h/w was similar. Phoenix sounds great. Pity as the tune makes the game!

Be sure to search MT for driver or machine shortname to see if something may already be reported/logged.

I'll add that similar "simple melody" chips are used to play tunes in Time Attacker and one bootleg of Atari Tetris.

Decapping these chips has been proposed, since the melodies are contained in some amount of internal ROM.
